    27 November 1954

    Professor Milton D. Soffer

    Department of Chemistry

    Smith College

    Northampton, Massachusetts

    Dear Professor Soffer:

I have just come to your letter of 16 November -I have been away from Pasadena on a lecture tour. This is the first news that I had had to the effect that the Voice of America was forbidden to mention the fact that I had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1954. I have written to Mr. Streibert, asking him to give me an authoritative statement about it.

I thank you very much for bringing this matter to my attention.

I may say that it occurred to me that I might say to Mr. Streibert (I did not in fact do so) that the news might be announced in an innocuous way by reading a list of recipients of the Presidential Medal for Merit, the highest award given to a citizen of the United States by the Government - the list is not very long - and mentioning incidentally, when my name appears, that the Nobel Prize had recently been awarded to me also.

    Cordially yours,
