  Dear Pauling,

  I have just heard finally from Vold to the effect that

  "....Budget hearings for determination of next year's program have just been completed and, although we are indeed authorized to appoint one new faculty member, it is at too junior a level for a man of your standing and previous experience. Please accept my apologies...."

  In short, just as you said, and I had been forewarned by our conversation. I would prefer it this way to a barely adequate offer which I might have been tempted to accept with subsequent disillusionment.

  I have been advised to put in an application for the vacant Chown Research Professorship of Chemistry at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and have done so. The research programme I have given is similar to the one you have already except that I have enlarged it to include work on non-biological macromolecules and colloidal systems, and to embrace a varied lot of applications of X-ray methods in the field of physical chemistry generally.

  In this application, I have not presumed to give your name as a referee but I should, nevertheless, be extremely grateful if you would write a short letter to the Principal of Queen's University saying that you understand that I am a candidate and then adding any brief remarks about my recent work, with which you are acquainted, that you may care to make. Such a letter, although of a much less formal nature than a proper reference, would certainly help me greatly. As I applied rather late, I should be grateful if you would write straight away, if you feel inclined to do so at all. I do hope you will.

  As you will probably have gathered, I am at rather an awkward stage of my career, and your kindness to me personally coupled with your interest in my work, has greatly heartened me. Believe me, I am very grateful.

  I regret that we did not have more time to discuss technical matters when you passed through London.

  We are nearing the final stage of writing up the protein work and I believe I mentioned to you that we are in no doubt that we can distinguish α 1 from α2 , experimentally and theoretically. Cytochrome-c is α2, so, apparently, is myoglobin. If true, this is a most interesting result because, as haemoglobin is α 1, myoglobin cannot be a simple fraction of haemoglobin, as has been suggested. We have also shown that, in calf thymus nucleoprotein, the histone is present in normal form. In other words, we are dealing with a simple addition complex (this is not re-constituted material) and the idea that the polypeptide chains are wrapped around the nucleic acid is at variance with our results on this substance. By the way, we have some good data on nucleic acids of various sorts. We first worked on them a long time ago but shelved the investigation. It should be possible to decide between your 3-helix structure and the less precisely defined 2-helix structure of the various English people. Of the two, I must say that I prefer theirs as it is more flexible and labile; also the phosphate groups are on the outside and there seems to be good chemical evidence for this. Nevertheless, your structure is most convincing from the packing point-of-view and it would not surprise me if both types of structure exist under different conditions. The essential feature in this molecule, to my mind, is that is does not have a singular structure but changes with environmental conditions - hence, life.

  Well, it has been good to write of these things as well as of my career problems. I am looking forward enormously to seeing you again. I shall be at Stockholm so that we may have an opportunity there.

  I am glad to have your letter, and to know about the work that you are doing on rate control strands - that is, on the paper- that you are presenting.

  I applied for a patent. I don't know just what the situation is about it. I do not know how to go about finding out - perhaps you could inquire of the Ordnance Department, the Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory, or some place like that.

  I can give you a statement from the oper literature. I have a "Citation to Accompany the Award of the Medal for Merit to Linus Carl Pauling," signed by Harry Truman, The White House, February 2, 1948, in which there occurs the sentence "His proposal for the use of rate control strands made the castible double base powder program more effective and widened the field of application." In my proposal I discussed not only rate control strands but also other ways of mixing two powders, in order to make use of some of the good properties of each.

  The Hebrew University will, I think, invite us for the week Christmas to New Year, + and I think that we should come, after our week in Greece. Samuel says that we should try to go to Bethlehem on Christmas Eve- it is in Arab territory, and we may well not succeed, even it the Embassy intercedes, because our passport has an Israel visa stamped on it.

  Schmidt has been censored because he drove me back from Jerusalem at night- we passed no cars but a couple of police cars- the road is near the border, and there is danger from marauding bands. I think that we'll have a

  I am writing in part to ask how you are getting along in your new job. I hope that everything is going along well with you.

  My wife and I expect to be in Germany this summer. We are flying to Tubingen about 1 July, and are to stay in Germany for 25 days. I am to give some talks on the structure of proteins, in medical schools. At present we plan to visit Tubingen, Heidelberg, perhaps Munich, Hemburg, and Kiel. We are going on to Sweden on 25 July.

  I have just written an article describing a new theory of ferromagnetism. In thinking about this subject I remembered the calculations that you made, on the strength of dsp hybrid orbitals. As I recall, you calculated the strengths of successive orthogonal orbitals, and found values 3.000 for the first three, and then somewhat lower values, with a rapid drop from 6 to 7. Have you prepared these calculations for publication? I should like to know what the values are that you found for the strengths of the successive orbitals, and also I should like to know whether you are planning to publish the work.

  Dear Mamma and Daddy,

  Rather late with a letter I am, I am sorry. Mamma, you are a darling. The cookies and the dates were wonderful. I tried to keep them as long as possible, but they are gone. I took the chair seat to the joker, I do not have the chairs yet. I shall check tomorrow. My curtains are very nice, I like them very much. Next year I want to live over the garage of Francis Crick's aunt. The Hostel is still terribly cold and wet, while it is often very warm outside.

  I was very glad to see you, Daddy. I feel you were rather tired and it was too rushed. Still, it was grand; I am looking forward to seeing you again.

  I bought a book today called The Strange Case of Alger Hiss by the Carl Jowitt. I have not read much.

  I went to Oxford last Friday. Sherry party at the Mullikan's; Ducia's party. They send their best wishes. I stayed with Dorothy & Thomas. He is writing a lot on West Africa. I had a good time. Saw Eleanor Milne & the Chaundy's.

  I am working fairly hard trying to get the myoglobin shape done by 15 July. I must read tonight some of Max's stuff.

  Bragg is off to the RI on 1 January 1954. They will keep this house & come here often. Unknown whether Max will go. John Kendrew will certainly stay here.

  You had better check up on the Porsche. If available at $2200, fine, if not Austin or Hillman Minx in Paris. I shall write shortly complete details.

  I get my watch back today. Cleaned and oiled. Thirty shillings = $4.25. The Sierra Madra joker never put the back on it.

  I enjoy photographs very much. I liked the valentine picture. You are all darlings.

  I see Betty Tyler now and then. Albert & Victor are in Scotland. She & Tess try to rest. She reads a lot. Tess works pretty hard.

  Sid Bernhard abandoned ship in Paris flew to New York on an emergency call to his mother. He is still there.

  Paris was rather nice but not overly exciting. I saw Mark & Elizabeth Julia. [Supper?]. I also visited my friend Bertrand Fourcade in their country house near Paris at Monsoult. 300 acres. Much the grandest experience was talking with Jeffries Wyna for a couple of hours. He is wonderful really a remarkable fellow. He says the College de France is sans money for next year, is a little uncertain. I suppose you have heard from him by now.

  I hope that book arrived safely. I bought a little Partridge called Usage & Abusage. Pretty good.

  I like my New Yorker very much. They interfere with work. Thank you, Mamma, for Arizona Highways. I think I shall decorate with the pictures. We ought to go to the desert. In my next room, I am going to build a pile in the basement to keep the place warm.

  I have now written Hillman, Austins, & Porsche in Paris & shall advise.

  Jane Kristensen showed up a couple of weekends ago. I was rather pleased to see her. I am not sure why she is getting married: the joker is certainly quite different from me. New Jaguar Mk VII and her mother were along.

  My Shortes OED came at last. The OED is terribly expensive. If so or so.

  Just back from Millport, Scotland where Victor and I tried to solve all problems of fertilization in the space of 3 weeks. Also visited some labs in Edinburgh for a couple of days especially Waddingtire (who has a lab of interesting immuno-emboyology going on) and Michael Savann's (who is the new D'Arcy Thompson).

  We put up some sperm for electron-microscopy (by Tom Anderson's critical point method) and some of the preparations, which we have just examined may be of interest [?] fine structure.

  I think that the U.S.C. matter has turned out the way it should, considering their financial situation.

  I am very glad to know about your conclusions about α1 and α2, and I look forward to seeing your published paper. I am also very much interested to learn about the state of the histone in calf thymis nucleoprotein. I judge that you mean that the histone is present as an α helix.

  I am also glad to learn that you have some good data on various sorts of nucleic acids. Dr. Rich here had been considering whether he should go ahead with a study of this sort – you know that we have been interested in it. I myself feel that there may well be a large number of nucleic acid structures.

  Corey and I are glad to give you permission to reproduce our drawing of the α helix.

  Things are going along well here. I am getting started on a new attack on the problem of the structure of collagen. I think

  Dr. Dennis P. Riley, of the Royal Institution, has written me that he has made application for the Chowh Research Professorship of Chemistry in Queen’s University. Although he has not asked me to write a reference for him, I have decided to write to you, in the hope that my knowledge about his work may be useful to you in making a decision.

  I have been deeply interested in the work that Dr. Riley and his collaborators have been carrying out during recent years. It is evident that he has a thoroughly sound training in physical chemistry, and that he is a man of unusual originality and effectiveness. He has a thorough understanding of modern methods of investigating the structure of large molecules, including the several physical chemical techniques and the x-ray diffraction techniques.

  I consider the work that he has carried out during the last two years, on the determination of the principal ways of folding of polypeptide chains in the globular proteins through the determination of radical distribution functions to be of the greatest importance. Dr. Riley and his collaborator, Dr. Arndt, have shown that the radial distribution method is far more powerful than it had been expected to be, and that it can be used to distinguish between the right-handed α helix and the left-handed α helix of L-amino-acid polypeptide chains. This work has been characterized not only by boldness but also by originality. Similar originality is evident in his work on the determination of the shape of nucleic acid molecules in solution by the analysis of the x-ray diffraction pattern.

  I had the pleasure of spending a day with Dr. Riley in London last month, and also of talking with him several times

  Dear Peter:

  I got to Brussels safely, and then to New York by way of Iceland, and met Mama there. We were in new Haven for a week, then in Philadelphia, Washington, Buffalo, and then home. Everything is all right here. Last weekend Mama and I drove to Fresno and San Luis Obispo. I gave a talk, before the Sub-section of the California Section of the American Chemical Society, in Fresno, and then stopped at San Luis Obispo to inspect the California State Polytechnic College, where some of the faculty members want to form a Sigma Club (not a Chapter).

  Your letter arrived today. We were glad to know what you have been doing.

  Your friend Ian Bush and Alison came in a couple of weeks ago, just after we had got home. I showed them around the laboratory during the afternoon, and then they came home, and had dinner with us. They could not stay over night, however, because they had to continue on their trip, and had left their things in a motel in Santa Monica. We were happy to see them.

  I was glad to hear about Bragg and the Royal Institution. We are looking forward to their visit here in September; also to having Kendrew, Perutz, and the others here.

  I have got a letter from Jeffries Wyman. He mentioned you. Apparently things are rather mixed up in Paris. However, Mama and I have been invited to come to India, for the month of January, and perhaps we shall decide to do that this year.

  I have some new models now, somewhat different in nature from any that I have used before, and I am trying to find a better structure for collagen. I have been expecting to be busy now, reading galley proof of GENERAL CHEMISTRY, but the galley proof has not yet arrived. I hope that they are not delayed in publishing it—it would be too bad if we did not have copies in October, for the freshmen.

  I was pleased to find, on getting home, that the sophomore who have been taking our course Chem 20, Electric and Magnetic Properties of Molecules, seemed to be very well satisfied with the instruction that Gunnar has given them. I am taking the course over the rest of the year. We have 18 men in the class. Most of the honor students in physics, as well as those in chemistry, have registered for it.

  I hope to know in a couple of days whether we shall buy a Porsche or not. I think that I shall take a ride in one tomorrow, and find out just what the financial arrangements are.

  I have been delayed in writing to you because of my trip to Europe. I was glad to see our second son, Peter, in England, and I had a good time at the Solvay Congress in Brussels. Then I came back to New York, by way of Iceland, and met my wife there. We spent a few days in New Haven, and then went on to Philadelphia, Washington, and Buffalo. I gave the Treat B. Johnson Lectures in New Haven, and the Foster Lectures in Buffalo.

  Since getting back to Pasadena I have been kept busy taking care of accumulated business. I have also been herd at work on the problem of the structure of collagen, and just a few days ago I succeeded in finding a structure that seems to me to be the correct one.

  Dearest Mamma,

  I was very pleased and still am to get a letter from you.

  No, I have not bought a dinner jacket, but I guess I shall. A three piece s b dinner jacket so about 33, about $90. A Two piece d. b. is 2 less. A white dinner jacket db or sb is about 17. or $48. These are all made in one of the better Cambridge Tailors. I think I might buy a dinner jacket here, I thought double breasted, and not a white jacket, which while very nice, is a bit too expensive for me now. There is a 4 week delivery, so I had better decide soon. You might advise me soon, please. I am 39" around chest & 33" around waist. I think I would rather get a new one rather than Papa's old one. A white one would be very nice. I really do not know what the cost of ready made stuff is here. Well I shall think seriously about getting a black d.b. dinner suit, & you can advise me.
