  Dearest Mamma,

  Thank you for all your wonderful letters. I like them very much.

  My curtains are up, and soon my piece of cloth and a pen nude by Odile. My phonograph works and the speaker is a lovely piece of birch I had made here. My room really looks rather nice. And the lampshade is asymmetric, just in front of the curtains.

  Bragg was worried I could not take care of Daddy and got him a room in Trinity.

  I wrote Linda but must do so again.

  I still don't know how I stand. I am working reasonably hard. No sleep. I was elected to the Perne Club, a highbrow philosophical and a glass of wine organization in Peterhouse. At my first meeting I argued fast and furiously. Have received several compliments on my handling of the problems mentioned by the speaker.

  Tuesday 3 Nov. 1953

  Dearest love: Today we dedicate the new biology lab & lay the cornerstone of the physics lab. Bohr arrived yesterday - I haven't seen him yet. Mark gave his lecture yesterday morning. He & I then drove to Tel Aviv to call on the American Chargé d'Affaires - I don't know why he wanted to do this. I had lunch with the Dostrvoskys & dinner with the Berenblums. There was a symposium in the afternoon - some interesting papers (Peyton Rous gave one) - but still a rather dull day. Tonight I speak in Jerusalem. The Director here is angry that I am doing so - the Institute & the University seem to be at outs with one another. I said that if he had told me I would not have agreed to do it (since the Institute has brought me here), but that I had assumed it my duty to give this additional lecture. Most of the people here are rather emotional, I judge. It is too bad that the Institute & the University do not cooperate better. I am looking forward to the ride to Jerusalem.

  Monday 9 AM. 2 Nov. 1953

  Dearest sweetheart:

  I have been on a tour for two days, with David Samuel + Abe Yoffe (a young fellow his age). We had a station wagon + driver. We first went to Hoifa, + stayed overnight in a hotel. Then to Acre, a coastal fortress held by the Turks against Napolean- the only place where he was repulsed; then to the Jordan diversion project- with armed Syrian soldiers just across the river (we had to get a special pass for this), to a Kibbuz (communal settlement), to Safad [?], the Sea of Galilee [?], Nazareth- where we visited Joseph's home, under a church, + had supper in an Arab restuarant- and to Tiberias, overnight. Between Safad + Tiberias we went by the Mount of Olives, + the scene on the Sea of Galilee of the miracle of the loaves + fishes. Then on Sunday we drove by Mt Tabor (Mount of the Ascension [?]) + then spent some hours in another Kibbuta, + then home by 4 ³⁰ for a reception, + then dinner at the Katchalsky's (you remember him in Stockholm).

  The weather has been fine so far- no rain.

  I must now walk over to the community hall in Rehovoth, where Mark is to speak at 10- the first of the scientific talks. Tomorrow night

  Dearest Mamma,

  I get many, many, wonderful letters from you.

  I went to London on Friday and met Daddy. His plane was 1 and 1/2 hours early, so I was late. We came here to Cambridge, and rested until six, when we went to Alfred Tissieres room in King's and had a sherry party. I gave it. Invited all the MRC people (Max Perutz, John Kendrew) the Braggs, my tutor, Mr. Pringle, some undergraduates, including Prince Mukarra Jah whom you will meet I suspect in Hyderabad">. We all drank a lot. Then we went to the Rothschild's and had dinner. It was very nice. I talked too much. Very bad. I try hard not to, but had too much to drink.

  On Saturday, we came to the lab and Daddy talked. We went to lunch at the Braggs. Patience and Margaret were there. Then, since I had arranged to borrow a car from Victor, we went to Merton Hall. Victor gave us the Bentley and Wally to drive it. So we drove to the airport and I put Daddy on the plane. I do not think it was too tiring for him. I was extremely pleased to see him.

  I am working a little. No girls. I have concluded you and Daddy are trying to get me married. Hmmm. No prospects I guess. Don't know well enough what I want. I shall let you know when I want to.

  Daddy and I were very pleased to get your letter. Darn the sewer people. I could have found the cesspool without touching the garden. I guess too late now.

  I must write Linda. And Crellin. And Jack. Etc.

  I may say that of the 211 Ph.D.'s in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, 97 are now located in states east of the Rockies. The percentage is, I think, approximately the same for masters and bachelors as for doctors.

  In view of this fact, I am pleased to know that you are extending your recruiting activities to include the California Institute of Technology. Our Placement Office has told me that Dr. Rogers will be here during the early part of December for interviewing. If he has time I hope he will drop in to see me.

  Dearest Mamma,

  I receive no end of wonderful letters from you. You, I think, are probably too busy to write all the time.

  I went to a 21^st birthday party on Saturday of a boy in Peterhouse. Sherry, turkey, food, champagne, cake, and a claret cup. Very nice.I wore Daddy's dinner jacket and was a gay blade. Met two girls, one from Victoria B.C. and one from Cambridge, Mass. Nice girls. One lives in London. I have not met any girls I really like yet. Met some from Girton. Rather clever. Arty-Tarty.

  I found a woman who knits wonderful sweaters. Anything you like. Sort of expensive, but really beautiful. Perhaps I should get one. A splurge.

  My room is not bad. I must change it around and then it will be better.

  The cloth (Swedish) is a little bit much with the curtains. I accomplished some work today. Something really done. Feel fine. Tomorrow some more. And so on

  I still am a little unsure of my future. Beach[comber] in Southern Italy. I think perhaps starving in England is more comfortable than starving in Italy.

  I am reading two books. South Wind by Norman Douglas and Duff Cooper’s autobiography. Latter so I can argue with Victor about his friends. I am a little tired of Mr. Duff Cooper. Douglas wrote a book on lymericks that is really a classic. Very good.

  The personalities in this place are remarkable. So far I am on fairly good terms with everyone. I hope it lasts. I don't think I shall find an English girl to marry.

  Dear Dr. Feinberg:

  I am glad to have your letter of 16 November, and to give you such information as I can about Dr. Morris Goodman.

  Dr. Goodman worked in collaboration with some of my colleagues while he was in the California Institute of Technology, and I had the opportunity to talk with him several times about his work. However, he did not work directly with me, and I have to admit that I do not know his intimately.

  I have the opinion that he has a good background of knowledge and experience in modern biochemical techniques. Much of his work has been with proteins, and the impression that I formed on talking with him is that he understands what he is doing, and carries through his work in a satisfactory way. He seems to have a good knowledge of chemistry, although I judge that he is not trained in physical chemistry and molecular structure, or the more mathematical aspects of chemistry.

  Dr. Goodman impressed me as having a good personality, and I would expect him to work satisfactorily with other people. He seemed to me to have a considerable amount of originality.

  To summarize, I would say that the contacts that I had with Dr. Goodman left me with a favorable impression of him, but that I did not know him well enough to be able to form a really precise estimate of his abilities.

  Dear Dr. Jones:

  I was interested to see your note on polarized infrared spectrum of potassium aurous cyanide in the Journal of Chemical Physics. I am writing now, however, to say that I am surprised at your not knowing what has been done in the Gates and Crellin Laboratories of Chemistry in past years. You mention that x-ray examination shows that the substances crystallizes in the rhombohedral system, but you do not say anything about the work carried out by J. L. Hoard in the Gates Laboratory on potassium silver cyanide, Z. fur Kristallographie, 84, 231-255 (1933) - see Struktur Bericht, III, pages 82 and 400. Hoard found that the linear complexes make an angle of about 25° (I have not calculated it out from his parameters, which are precisely given) with the trigonal axis. I judge that this would be compatible with the amount of polarization that you observe for the stretching vibrations.

  Dear John:

  I have just written to Meckler to ask him if he was planning to make calculations for the nitrogen molecule similar to those that he has made for oxygen. I have thought that It might be good to ask you the same question, because you might have time for extending your work that he does not know about.

  Verner Schomaker and I have been making arrangements to carry out a theoretical treatment of the electronic structure of the normal state of the nitrogen molecule, to see if we could not answer the question as to the choice between the alternative experimental values for this molecule. We do not, however, want to go to this work if you have in mind carrying it out.

  I should also be interested to know whether or not you plan to attack carbon monoxide in the same way.

  Finally, I should be grateful to you for your comments on my paper on "A Theory of Ferromagnetism". It seems to me to be a good theory, and if you have some objections to it, I should like to know what they are, in order that I might think more about them.

  One of the young men in the laboratory here has carried out a refinement of the theory, involving a concentration of the wave functions on to the atoms with favorably oriented spins, and away from the atoms with unfavorably oriented spins, with results in somewhat bettor agreement with the experimental values for the Curie temperatures than given by the simple theory.
