  Dear Dr. Mazia:

  I am glad to have your letter of 11 March, and to know about your work on surface films of deoxyribonucleic acid.

  I am afraid that I do not have much to say about your first question - as to how to account for the stability of DNA film over a solution in which the substance is soluble.

  I agree with you that your measurement of 22 A for the thickness of the film agrees nicely with our results. The diameter of our helix is about 18 A. If these molecules were to be packed together in a surface film, there is a chance that the contact distance would be somewhat less with a corresponding increase in the thickness of the film, accordingly your value of 22 is, I think, compatible with our structure.

  As to your third question, I do not have a strong feeling about the matter. I have not thought enough about this matter as yet, to have formed a sound opinion.

  It seems to me that the work that you and Mr. James have done adds one more piece of evidence to support our structure, to the extent that it makes the thickness of the molecule roughly 20 A.

  I hope that you will continue to carry on work in this field. Professor Corey and I do not feel at all sure that our structure is the correct one, but we do feel that it will be possible, in the course of a few years, to determine the fundamental folding of polynucleotide chains in the nucleic acids.

  Dearest little love:

  I've just arrived, safely, in Brussels, and am in my room. No one else seems to be here. Synge and Adair were in the London bus terminal, and Peter and I had coffee with them in the buffet, about noon. They came on the plane with me (S + A) but are in a hotel, rather than this club. I shall go for a walk now, and have dinner, and go to bed. The town seems to be very quit- it is Easter Monday, a bank holiday in England.

  I saw Dorothy and Thomas- they passed through Cambridge on the way to visit D's mother.

  Peter is in fine shape- his face no yet clear, but perhaps a bir better. He is cutting a wisdom

  tooth. He flies tomorrow to Paris. He liked the stuffed dates and cookies. I overlooked his vest. Anyway, he has a bright red one, with brass buttons - they are popular with the boys.

  We had lunch with the Braggs, + their two daughters. The talk was much about Crellin. The Braggs are looking forward to their trip to California.

  I dined with Bragg + Roughton last night in Trinity College. I didn't see the Todds, nor the Rothchilds + Tylers- they were in Rushbrooke.

  The flight from London was nice, but a bit cloudy + a bit rough. Our bus

  from the airport met a 4-engined plane coming toward us on the ground. Our driver turned the bus around, shot back up the road ahead of the plane (which took up the whole road) and then off to one side. This is an unusual hazard.

  I haven't yet learned what our schedule is for the week, not who will be here (some I know about). I am already pretty lonesome, after five days.

  I have seen the King's College nucleic acid pictures, and talked with Watson and Crick, and I think that our structure is probably wrong, and theirs right.

  Our congress has not yet started, and I have not yet seen anyone (except Synge and Adair, Yesterday). We begin tomorrow, at 9:30.

  Today I woke at 10:30. I was tired, not having slept very well on the plane or in Cambridge. The bed here is good. I had my continental breakfast in my room, and read until 1, in a French detective story (translated from the English). Then from 1 to 4:30 I walked around the center of town- Hotel de ville (very nice), Kings

  town house, Mameken pr's [?], etc. Then I rested in my room until 6, sow a movie (made in France), had dinner, and come home.

  I hade gone to the movie (m) and restaurant (R)

  by a simple way. When I came out I thought I would save a block (dotted line). Instead I got lost, and walked about a mile, coming out far beyond + below my place. I estimated my return route as shown by the /\/\/\/\/\/\/ line. Of course, the blocks aren't square and the streets aren't straight.

  I think the movies help me to understand French. The words spoken in French are given ( in some what shortened version) in written Flemish at the bottom of the screen, and I can read it easily.

  I have a nice room, with a nice bathroom, much hot water, a bidet by the toilet, etc. This place is a club for university professors, etc. Very few people here - I have seen one or two in the foyer.

  The papers say that the Russians have turned over a new leaf, are very reasonable, and they hope that the Americans will be , too.

  I have thought more about the nucleic acid structure of Crick + Watson, + I think that it is probably right.

  P.S. Last night, 8:30 to 9, as I was coming home from my supper + movie, I sow the fireworks celebration for Princess Josephine - Charlotte, who gets married tomorrow. Very fine - like Lurich [?]. She came out on her balcony + waved to her thousands of shouting countrymen. The palace is only one block from the club.

  Dearest love:

  Today was my working day. From the schedule I expected to speak tomorrow — Edwin Cohn and Kai Pedersen were to appear today. But Cohn did not come, nor did he write his report, nor inform them of his defection until two weeks ago; so he was not on today's program — a Belgian has been working hard to fill this gap, and will report later. Pedersen (who sends you his regards, and looks forward to seeing you in Stockholm, as does also Tiseluis [?] (Mrs. T. is not here; she has the flu)) spoke, and the discussion

  of his paper lasted until mid-afternoon (we had a good lunch; our meetings are in the Cité Estudiantine, of the Université Libre, founded as a private university, & now supported by the government). Havinga took part in the discussion, & said that I should tell about sickle-cell anemia, which I did briefly, just before lunch.

  Then at mid-afternoon I gave my report. It was well received, but discussion is postponed until tomorrow morning, when Bragg begins it. Lady Bragg is here too. We then had tea, & met the Rector, who spent two months teaching philosophy in Claremont College, four years ago.

  Congress for Physics next year will be on the subject of metals.

  After tea we rode the tram (Karrer & I — Mrs. Karrer had been present at the lunch, but not the tea; she sends her regards to you) back to the Club. I hunted around for a movie, and went to one by Rene Clair, "Les Belles de Nint." It is very clever and amusing — about a young pianist & composer who lives over a garage & teaches elementary school & gives piano lessons. He is driven nearly wild by the noises of the revved-up cars, the air hammer digging up the streets, the hack saw, etc; he can't sleep, and when he does sleep he has dreams about himself as a leading composer & hero in former times — 1900, 1830, Foreign Legion, with the Three Musketeers, leading the Revolution against the nobles — also being a noble (or musician with them) & taken to the guilletine [sic], in the stone age in a Jeep, etc. He rescues girls right & left. Finally all ends well; his composition is performed at the Paris Opera.

  Yesterday was also an interesting day, with a talk by Bragg + discussion of my work in the morning, and reports by Chibnall and others in the afternoon. This morning Theorell is to speak.

  I went to a movie last night, but it wasn't very good. I came home, thought about collagen a while, and then went

  Tomorrow we attend the Biochemical meeting, and I go to tea at the Timmermans. On Sunday we make a tour of Bruges. We continue our work on Monday, + on Tuesday I start home. I shall come to La Guardia as soon as I can, and look for you at the Eastern Airlines place. My BOAC plane may be late, of course.

  I suggested that the Braggs come to Pasadena a week early in order that we might take them to Yosemite. They plan to do so.

  I am sorry not to write sooner. I have been gone a few days to Paris where it is warm & the trees are in bloom and I could not write or work.

  Thank you Daddy for your letter & the cheques. I shall give Linda the one.

  They are still away, presumably in Spain. I still think this trip is good, though Linda knows anyway what she is doing. I really cannot say anymore until they return, I suppose at the beginning of next week.

  I must work very hard. I met a friend of yours Maria named Steven, a physicist. He folkdanced with you.

  I am still searching a little for a place to live next year.

  A big package has come from Elfriede. It's addressed to Linda. I am glad the book is going so well. I received a letter from the girl I escorted to the Ball at Luciafest in Stockholm and she uses it and seems to pass her exams by reading it.

  I received a letter from Linus and am glad he is still kicking. I was beginning to worry.

  I shall write when Linda returns.

  Dear Professor Pauling,

  I hope you were not puzzled because we said very little about coiled-coils when you were here, but your letter to Perutz about them only reached us on the day after you left.

  My recollection of our conversation in the summer is very similar to yours, except that, as I recall it, it was slightly longer than you have remembered it. In particular I touched on knobs-into-holes packing and the possibility of a 7-strand cable. You pointed out to me that this might explain the 27 Å equatorial reflection.

  It was natural, therefore, that when Peter told us you were working on coiled-coils that the idea should get round that I had suggested the idea to you. When your Nature article was eventually published it was clear to me that there were very little grounds, if any, for such a belief. In particular you had suggested a definite model, whereas I had not, and, more important, you had put forward a different reason for the coiling.

  In my view the idea that the α-helix might be inclined is an obvious one, and it is only a small, step from that to the idea of coiling. I attach much more importance to the reasons underlying the coiling, and the proof that a coiled-coil gives both 5.1 and 1.5 Å reflections on the meridian. On these points we have followed independent paths.

  On reflection I think it might have made things easier if you had let me know you were writing a paper on the idea, so that I would have had the opportunity of putting forward my ideas simultaneously However, as things turned out, thanks to the many channels of communic-ation between Caltech. and the Cavendish, this is effectively what happened.

  We very much enjoyed your visit here. Watson and I would be most interested to learn what you feel about our D.N.A. structure when you have had time to digest the idea and the experimental data.

  Dear Max:

  I received your letter, to Harry Weaver, this morning, and immediately telephoned him.

  He had not seen your letter yet, but after I told him what you had said, and what my opinion was, he said that he would bring Watson over for the Virus Symposium.

  He suggested that they might save money by having Watson stay here through the summer, instead of returning to England. I pointed out that the work that Watson is doing in collaboration with Crick is very important, and that it might well be important enough to justify sending him back to Cambridge, even for the period of two months. I judge that he agreed to do that, if necessary.

  I was very deeply impressed by the Watson-Crick structure, I do not know whether you know what put Corey and me off on the wrong track. The x-ray photographs that we had, which had been made by Dr. Rich, and which are essentially identical with those obtained some years ago by Astbury and Bell, are really the superposition of two patterns, due to two different modifications of sodium thymonucloates. This had been discovered a year or more ago by the King's College people, but they had not announced it, and I did not know that this was so. Corey and I had tried to find the structure that accounted for one of the principal features of one pattern, and simultaneously for one of the principal features of the second pattern, Watson and Crick saw the x-ray photographs made in King's College a couple of months ago, when they attended a seminar there, and they immediately began work on the problem. The King's College people had already derived one conclusion from the photographs, as to the nature of the helical structure. Watson and Crick amplified this by the idea of complementariness between purine and pyrimidine residues, and formulated

  their structure. While there is still a chance that their stricture is wrong, I think that it is highly probable that it is right. It has very important implications, as you mention. It think that it is the most significant step forward that has been taken for a long time.

  Dear Parents,

  Please accept my humblest apologies for not writing you before this. The application for the drivers license came the Monday after Mamma left. I was glad to get it. A new windshield for the Fordie will cost about $12 for the glass and $3 to install it. I went down and got insurance. I didn't get fire and theft. Mr. Dawson didn't think it was worth it on an old car. I greatly enjoy the feeling of driving without the fear of getting a ticket for no lisence. [sic]

  I will make arrangements to meet you at the airport next week.

  The Fleming House party was a great success. We cooked fifty pounds of spare ribs. We had a hell of a time finding room to cook them, but we managed. Jack said that he would cook spare rips [sic] for our picnic at the time of the workshop.

  Everything is under control here. At the present time I have $2.69. Hope I can make out. I didn't go to the road race because I couldn't find anybody who wanted to go. McCormack and Tucker went, but the TC only holds two people. Damn good race, tho. Phil Hill won in a Ferrari 2.9.

  Sue hasn't come to work this week. I called her up this afternoon and she says her heart hurts. Says it feels like it will stop beating. Says Doctor X told her to keep quiet and not bend over. Hm.

  Well, I must do some home-work and write to my siblings.
