    17 August - Wed.

    Dear Peter,

We were sorry that the Daddy didn't respond to your letter.

I think the British don't realize who [sic] serious a contempt of Congress charge can be. There are some 20 people in jail at this moment on 1st Amendment charges - and many more about to go to jail if the courts decide against them. It is hard for us to believe too, and we are doing everything we can to do away with those committees. I feel very sad about the Daddy missing the Congress. Angry too that I had to give up my meetings.

Pat and Merton are here for two days. I've cut off all my hair - very short.

    Love, Mamma
