    Dear Pop:

The other day Gerardo Jovinelli called to ask how two friends of his could get in contact with Cal Tech. They are Ph.D's in Physics in Rome and are apparently interested in teaching and research. If you could let me know who they could contact, I would be glad to forward the information to Gerardo.

I enclose a few clippings for your file.

Liny had a magnificent time during his week with you. He is still talking about it. Thank you very much for having him.

    Much Love,

    Linus

    Dr. Albert Sprague Coolidge

    26 Reservoir Street

    Cambridge 38, Massachusetts

    Dear Dr. Coolidge:

I am pleased to read your letter of 30 April; although sorry to read that you shall not be giving your course on molecular structure again. The third edition of my book The Nature of the Chemical Bond will be available about January 1960.

I agree with you that the calculation that you present in your letter shows that no further hybridization occurs in boron trimethyl, and accordingly that the molecule can be given a theoretical treatment that leads to the expectation of a planar structure.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:jh

    7 May 1959

    Dr. Linus Pauling Jr.

    1531 South Beretania Street

    Honolulu 14, Hawaii

    Dear Linus:

I suggest that you tell Gerardo Jovinelli to tell his two Ph.D. friends in Rome to write to Professor Robert F. Bacher, Chairman, Division of Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, and ask what the possibilities are for getting post-doctoral appointments in physics.

    Thanks for the clippings.

Mama and I had a good time when we went east for two weeks. We stopped at Ford Motor Company Research Laboratory, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Detroit, Penn State University, Philadelphia, and New York, and came home by jet. We enjoyed especially a flight at about 2000 feet from Penn State University (central Pennsylvania) over the Appalachians to Philadelphia in a Cessna.

I am pleased that Liny enjoyed his week with us. Mama and I had a good time with him, too. We are looking forward to having him back again, and to having the other children, too-perhaps one at a time.

I am just finishing the manuscript of the third edition of the Nature of the Chemical Bond, on which I was working in Honolulu. Most of it has been sent to the publishers already.

We are getting ready to go to Europe and probably to Africa, where we shall visit Dr. Schweitzer in Lambarene.

Much love to you and Anita and the children,

    Linus Pauling:w

    Dr. A. C. Claus

    105 Lancaster Street

    Mount Prospect, Illinois

    Dear Dr. Claus:

I am pleased to have your letter of 8 May. I send here with a copy of the paper and the figures. You will note that Professor Bergman made very little change in your manuscript.

I hope that you will check the manuscript at once. I feel that it would be a shame if a good account of this work were not published. In particular, I am somewhat worried about the uncertainty in the values of the z parameters— it might require a good bit of work to eliminate this uncertainty.

Here let me remind you of the suggestion I made that Dr. Samson be asked if he would he willing to work on this paper. I am not sure that he would, but he has so much interest in intermetallic compounds and so much energy; as well as experience, that it might be worth while, unless you are able to devote the effort to it that is needed.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:jh

    Enclosure

    3500 Fairpoint Street

    Pasadena 8, California

    Dear Mom:

Rest assured that you are very welcome to stop off here August 15th on your way through. I see no reason why it should bother Liese at all. We shall be careful to avoid telling anyone about it so that you won't be bothered. We shall inform the Powells that you will be coming and that they are to meet you. Just to make sure, you might send them a wire prior to leaving Japan. Their address is the same as our's 3909 Round Top Drive. His name is Herbert and her's is Mary.

We are awfully sorry to miss you on your way through here, but are looking forward to seeing you in Pasadena at the end of August or the beginning of September. We shall let you know more exactly when we have our schedule finalized. Best wishes and have a good time on your trip.
