    4 June 1959

    Dear Peter,

Thanks for your letter with the information about the reference on the nickel chloride ion.

I should have been keeping in closer touch with you about our plans. First, I was appointed to the Solvay Chemistry Committee, but too late to permit me to change my plans in order to come to the Solvay Congress.

Second, Mommie and I are to leave on Saturday, 6 June, for Portland. I give the commencement address at Reed on Sunday. Then on Monday we fly back to Los Angeles and change to SAS for Copenhagen. We go directly on to Oslo, where we probably shall stay between 10 and 22 June, On 22 June we expect to arrive in London, SAS 511, 1:15 P.M. We have reservations at the Welbeck Hotel, made by the Ciba people. On Wednesday I give my talk. The conference continues on Thursday and Friday, with a big dinner on Friday and a Royal Society Conversazione on Thursday. There is an excursion to Greenwich by boat on Saturday. On Sunday we go to Germany, returning on Sunday 5 July. We shall have to go directly to Cambridge when we return, because I speak at the Conference on Proteins the first thing Monday morning. The conference ends on Thursday 9 July. We don't have any definite plan then for a few days. On Tuesday 14 July, 10:00 A.M., we leave for Africa. We are going to visit Dr. Schweitzer. Please do not tell anybody the dates of our visit to Dr. Schweitzer. Then we shall return directly to Stockholm, and, after a week in Stockholm, fly over the Pole to Tokyo, and then home.

I haven't understood why you have been thinking of going to Stockholm on June 10. Perhaps it is Oslo that you had in mind.

I shall look forward to seeing you and Julia and Thomas.

    Much love

    Dictated by Professor Pauling

    Signed in his absence:Jh
