  We are very glad that Zechmeister will be here early in November, and I wish to thank you for letting me know about his visit in America. I had not discussed the question further with him after writing during the summer because I interpreted his letter to me as meaning that he would not have time to come West.

  Niemann has been working hard since his arrival here and is making progress on his new problem, the investigation of the fatty substances in brain and nerve tissue. With Niemann, Buchman, and Haggen-Smit (who is formally in the Biology Department but is supervising the work of some of our graduate students in organic chemistry), as well as Lucas, I feel that our organic program is developing very well. We are leaving the office and laboratories planned for Todd unoccupied, but we do not have any man definitely in mind for appointment. I would be very grateful if you could let us know in case that you hear about another young organic chemist as able and energetic and full of promise as Niemann, or if you have an other suggestions regarding our Professorship.

  Dear Professor Lamb:

  I am returning the two papers "Infrared Studdes VIII. Absorption Bands of Hydrogels" by A. M. Buswell, Karl Krebs and W. H. Rodebush and "Infrared Studies IX, Effect of Ions of the Lyotropic Series on the Absorption Spectrum of Water" by A. M. Buswell, R. C. Gore and W. H. Rodebush.

  I feel that these papers are not of the same quality as the earlier ones in the series, and I do not recommend their publication in their present form.

  The first paper (VIII) contains on pp. 4-6a qualitative discussion only of the work on β-amylose, gelatin, and agar, with no data given in tables or figures. This part of the paper seems to me to have little value. In Figure 1 the absorption of the gelatin is compared with that of N-ethyl acetamide. I have been unable to understand the discussion of this given on p. 2. There can’t be OH-N bonds in N-ethyl acetamide, and I hence fail to see why the authors say that the gelatin absorption "is apparently due to O-H-N as suggested by Wrinch."

  In the second paper (IX) measurements are reported for solutions of three salts (KNO₃, KI, K₃SO₄). The results for three salts only hardly justify correlation with the lyotropic series, or review of the field as given on pp. 1-3. The Authors say that further work is under way, and I recommend that this unimportant communication be withdrawn and the material included with the new results in a later paper.

  It is difficult to understand why dissolved ions should increase the 3300 cm^-1 absorption so greatly without affecting the shape of the curve. A colleague of mine experiences in the infrared field says that reflection at the fluorite-water interface would be large and would change in magnitude with change in refractive index. How have the Authors corrected for this effect?

  I have made several penciled corrections of spelling and typographical errors on the manuscripts. The lettering on the figures is poor; the word 'infrared" should not be capitalized; and "1 N KNO₃" or "N KNO₃" should be used instead of "NS KNOS."

  We agree with you regarding the existence of peaks between minima. I might point out that these peaks can be interpreted as due to the maxima between the minima, inasmuch as the interaction between the broad flat maxima is at a maximum a distance equal to the distance between the minima.

  Corey and I probably shall not publish any criticism of the Wrinch-Langmuir stuff, even though we feel that agreement reached with the aid of so many arbitrary assumptions has little significance.

  We are hoping to make a positive contribution in the field some time.

  Dear Mr. Bliss:

  I am glad to give my opinion about the problem of extra large drawings.

  Dr. Brockway and I are without doubt responsible for the convention regarding electron diffraction curves in this country. We found it convenient to adopt the one inch s scale for the electron diffraction curves used in the actual structure determinations, in order that sufficient accuracy might be obtained. It was then found that the easiest way of preparing the drawings for publication was to make ink drawings without change of scale. It would, in fact, be difficult to make the inked curves on a much smaller scale because of the small radii of curvature at the maxim and minima, I feel that you would be justified in insisting that photographs or photostats of letter size or smaller be submitted in place of those very large figures. We would be glad to go to the extra trouble and expense involved in case that you ware to make such a ruling.
