Dear Mr. Rosenthal:
In answer to your letter, I am sending you a copy of my 1963 lecture, “Science and Peace”, containing some statements about the number of deformed children caused by the testing of atomic bombs. I enclose also a copy of my 1958 paper in Science on Carbon-14.
On page 10 of Science and Peace, there is reference to a report by the United States Federal Radiation Council. This Council was a high-level committee appointed by President Kennedy, and including several members of his cabinet. The numbers that this committee gave for probable genetic effects (numbers of deformed children) were referred to the United States, rather than the whole world, and to an estimated continued population of 150 million, whereas I have assumed a continued increase in population. The numbers are, however, except for the difference in basis, essentially the same as those given in my lecture.
Sincerely,
Linus Pauling
