  Dear Peter:

  I am writing especially to report on the progress of mama's strained back.

  She was very uncomfortable for about a week and moderately uncomfortable for another week. Now she seems to be in reasonably good shape, and a day or so ago she made the remark to me that she was glad that her back was apparently not in permanently bad shape. I don't know how she sprained it, but probably by lifting some rocks or trees at the ranch.

  We are looking forward to learning from you whether or not you will be able to come to spend Christmas with us. I trust that you received the check that she sent.

  I am continuing my work, begun this summer, on the study of certain vitamins and other substances when ingested by human beings. I have been doing the laboratory work by myself, so far, with some help from mama, but now I have hired an assistant, and perhaps shall get another girl to help with the work.

  I look forward to learning how your study of the complicated nickel compounds turns out. I do not see any reason why an octahedral diamagnetic nickelous complex might not exist, under rather special circumstances, such that the four square planar bonds resonate among various sets of four planar positions. The experimental evidence, however, indicates that a regular octahedral ligancy is not ordinarily the stable one for a diamagnetic nickelous complex.

  SUBJECT: Administration of Vitamin C

  I have found that vitamin C is easily administered by mouth, in quantities as large as 10 grams of anhydrous ascorbic acid, by mixing it into orange juice.

  I make use of frozen orange juice, mixed with a blender. Please have the University order a blender for the laboratory (probably Sears-we have ordered the refrigerator from Sears).

  You may want a can opener, too.

  The can of frozen orange juice is mixed with three cans of distilled water. For a large dose of ascorbic acid, 5 to 10 grams, a glass of orange juice is used. I add an amount of sugar equal to the amount of ascorbic acid, to improve the taste.

  In your questionnaire you should make note of the weight of the subject. I suggest that we give the larger doses of ascorbic acid proportional to the two-thirds power of the body weight. For example, the following amounts might be used:

  Dear Petie,

  We arrived home late Tuesday night. Our touch down in London lasted several hours! A bird flew into one nose cone – or rather the nose cone caught up with a bird as we came in so repairs or replacement had to be made. If we had known it we might have tried harder to find you.

  Alas! My paper shade is black and white. The black is very striking and in a black and white room would be exciting. It is a harlequin touch. But I want an all white. I’ll give this one away. In looking at the stamp on the envelope I see that the “black” is not apparent and only the “white” designation is there. That explains the error.

  How are you? We are a bit weary and are going to the ranch today. I’m not sure we can spend Thanksgiving there for Paddy has a talk here the 22nd.

  Our resonance energy is being put to too great a strain I think and we keep slapping our double bonds around like a windmill.

  How is Julia? I hope better. Jack Sherman quit his job and lives now in Paris. He knows a lot about computers (?). Do you remember him? He has gout but controls it with colchicine – no diet.

  Dear Bobby, Reese, and Larry:

  I am pleased that you should write to ask me why palladium has 18 electrons in its outer orbit while all other elements have 8 at the most. Your question, as written in your letter, contains an error. The fact is that many elements, such as copper, silver, zinc, and mercury, tend to lose electrons to form ions with 18 electrons in the outer shell. Copper and silver tend to lose 1 electron, and zinc and mercury tend to lose 2 electrons. I think that you could find an explanation of this matter in a textbook of general chemistry.

  Your question about the inert gases may be answered by my saying several compounds of xenon have been made, such as xenon hexafluoride, and a few compounds of krypton also.

  Dear Peter,

  We are having a blowy, blustery day here, so I guess our summer weather is over at last. This is the first day that there are no surfboard riders in the ocean outside our windows.

  We were in New Orleans a week ago. The Daddy received the Roebling Medal from the Mineralogical Society. Barclay and Linda were also there.

  We had a delayed Thanksgiving here on Saturday with Linda and family plus 5 dogs – mother with 4 pups and Crellin and family. We ate on our patio for it was a warm, lovely sunny day.

  Everyone is fine. We do like having a house right on the beach and the shore life is very fine here. The house itself isn’t much but is passable.

  How are you? We have been worried about the devaluation of the pound. Does that make things much more difficult for you? I hope you hadn’t cashed your check but I’m afraid you must have done so.

  We have been reading more things about Churchill and what a scoundrel he was. How stupid, too.

  Is your work going well? We go to UCLA next week. The Daddy will give three or four lectures there. He is enjoying being at the University again. Our house in Santa Barbara was so lovely though and the garden so fine. Also I like S.B. much better than La Jolla. I think we’ll go to the ranch for Christmas but probably won’t have our family reunion. All of the grandchildren are fun but they do make a lot of work.

  Did you see Virginia Durr again? I judge that her friend Mrs. Glass (?) is something of a viper. Do you see much of her?

  I’m having a terrible time getting any Christmas spirit going. Perhaps I won’t make any effort this year.
