  I am writing to tell you that mama is in the hospital, but I expect her to be coming home in a day or two.

  She is in excellent shape, but the doctors are trying to find out what happened to her.

  Night before last, at midnight, when we returned home from a dinner party that was mildly interesting, with nothing abnormal having happened in any way, we went to bed. She worked on a crossword puzzle for about 15 minutes, talking to me about it, and then turned off the light. I asked her a question about the crossword puzzle, which she answered. She then said "I am terribly dizzy—I am terribly dizzy". When she did not answer me, I turned on the light, and found that she was unconscious and could not be awakened. Her heart beat was strong and normal. I took her to the hospital (the police ambulance came to take her), and she regained consciousness slowly over a period beginning in about half an hour. She does not seem to have had a thrombosis, and the evidence suggests that there was no abnormality in functioning of the heart. There seems to have been a decreased supply of oxygen to the brain, however. She has just had X-rays of the head made and EEG records. I don't know what the results are of this. She is lively and seems to be normal, with no paralysis and with all reflexes normal. The doctors do not seem to know yet what happened to her. I think that she will be home in a day or two.

  Linda and Barclay have come down, and also Crellin. They have now gone back home. Linda may come down again to help out when mama gets home from the hospital. She is being kept quiet, although she can get out of bed and walk around (to the toilet, for example). I suppose that she will have some sort of medication prescribed for her, when the doctors can decide what was responsible for the episode.

  Dear Parents,

  Thank you for your several letters. I am certainly pleased to receive them from you. I am due to arrive at Los Angeles airport on Wednesday December 20th at 4:15 pm on a Pan Am plane directly from London. I may change things around a bit but will let you know if I do. I am on a 21 day excursion ticket which restricts days of travel and the total time. Term is over the 15th and perhaps I should come immediately.

  I will be leaving on Monday the 8th January for one day in Boston and then return to London.

  At the end of January or sometime thereafter I shall move into a three room flat belonging to the College in Earl's Court. It is not awfully nice and I do not like the district very much but I hope then to move into another flat in Kensington, which I should like.

  Julie and the kids are going to her parents for Christmas. Therefore there is not much point in my sitting around here feeling sorry for myself. I still do not know when my diffractometer will come. When it comes I shall be anxious to finish the job and get it working. I have just been on a week's course on how to maintain the computer. I think it will pay in the long run if I can fix it myself and not have to wait for an engineer to come. It is a very simple computer and I am pleased to know how it works.

  Perhaps I should pay the extra £50 and come for six more clays. The cost per day is less for those six days then the other 21. If there is no reunion I shall have to travel around and visit the various parts.

  I have solved the structure of what was supposed to be Ni (Diarsine)3 • 2(ClO4). It is not. It is Ni.Triarsine.Diarsine.2(ClO4). It was not a simple analysis by traditional methods and I am glad it is solved.

  I am not sure, but I think that your cheque went through before the devaluation. It is too bad but not awfully important. It means I have lost about $10,000 on my house in terms of dollars.

  I am feeling sick with myself about something else. A year ago I almost but not quite bought a little stock in my favourite computer company. It is worth SIX TIMES today what it was then. I have been feeling terrible for days.

  Make the fruit cake and Christmas Cake and buy some pecans for P--------N R-----S. Get some maple syrup.

  I look forward to seeing you. If nothing is happening here and I cannot stand waiting any longer I shall come sooner.

  She has been walking around today, and is scheduled to come home tomorrow. Linda will stay with us for a few days, to help keep an eye on her.

  The further developments in her case are that the presence of a tumor has been ruled out. The spinal tap showed proper pressure of fluid, the cerebral spinal fluid was clear, the protein content was normal, and, in addition, she gave a very good technetium scan when this test was tried. Her EEG shows an abnormality, a sort of spiking in the left hemisphere, posterior, I think. I judge that it is definite that might be considered borderline. Her syncope was, however, not accompanied by any foaming or jerkiness or other evidence of convulsion. The neurologist, Dr. DeBolt, wanted to carry out an X-ray study with injection of a radiopaque material into an artery, which is a real operation lasting an hour and a half and involving general anesthesia. Something was visible on the X-rays of her head, at the back, which might have been interpreted as a small tumor of some sort. The neurosurgeon, Dr. Cobb, said that he felt sure that what was visible is a venous lake, a congenital malformation in the skull, and not connected with the EEG spiking. She has now gone on a therapy of nicotinic acid and a hormone, premergine or something like that. She seems to be perfectly normal and in excellent spirits.

  We are looking forward to seeing you, and hope that you will make a visit with us before long.

  Dear Parents,

  I am concerned to hear that Mamma has something wrong with her. I hope everything goes well. I am glad you are in good spirits.

  I have changed my flight plans to be one day later: arriving in Los Angeles Pan Am 121 from London 1615 on Thursday 21st December. Leaving on Tuesday 9th Jan at 0915.

  I want to take Sara to the College children’s Christmas party on the 20th. She is anxious to go and I should like to be with her. She is not a very happy little girl and I like to be with her as much as possible.

  If it is inconvenient for me to come now I could leave it until next summer. Perhaps I could bring the kids then, though I think I may have trouble getting them for more than a fortnight.

  If you are busy perhaps Linda could meet me. I would like to borrow a car from someplace in order to be mobile to visit people. I shall plan to spend a few days with each of the family units.

  I hope everything is alright.
