  Dear Peter:

  I trust that you received my letter, saying that mama and I would not be coming to Europe now, and accordingly would not see you on 15 October.

  About ten days ago mama hurt her back, probably trying to lift a big rock or a tree or something. She was in bed for several days, and then felt well enough, after receiving some medicine, for us to drive from the ranch to La Jolla, in two stages, on successive days. Since then she has seemed to be improving steadily, but is not in shape to spend long hours sitting up in an airplane seat, and would not be able to do very much if we were to travel. Accordingly, I am going to give my Expo 67 lecture in Montreal, and then come back home to La Jolla.

  Is there the possibility that you would come over to visit us, perhaps at Christmas? I think that mama and I shall spend a good bit of December at the ranch. During the first half of December I am giving some lectures at UCLA.
