  Dear Frank and Norah:

  Thanks for your letter of 22 June, which I have just seen after our return from three weeks at our ranch. I am pleased that you should congratulate me on my being a foreign member of the French Academy of Sciences. I was a correspondent in Mineralogy (later Geology) of the French Academy for about twenty years, before being promoted to foreign member. This mineralogy-geology business goes back some thirty-five years, when I was working hard on the structure of minerals. I am, by the way, being given the Roebling Medal of the American Mineralogical Society in November of this year, again the result of work that I did thirty-five years ago.

  Ava Helen and I are spending the summer at the ranch. I have three boys and a girl, all recent graduates (two at UCLA, one at University of London) carrying on research with me, and helping us at the ranch. I think that they are all going to be graduate students next fall, the two Englishmen in England and the two others (a young man and his wife) at University of California, San Diego.

  I have, also, accepted appointment as Professor of Chemistry in the University of California, San Diego, and we are going to move there in September.

  We were in the 15 April Demonstration Against the War in Vietnam, in New York, and I spoke in front of the United Nations building (only one newspaper, the World-Herald- Tribune, mentioned my speech). I enclose an statement that I made at t eh Pacem in Terris II Convocation. We made a short trip to Europe in May.
