    Professor Jurg Waser

    Chemistry Department

    California Institute of Technology

    Pasadena, California

    Dear Jurg:

I thank you for sending me a copy of your book BASIC CHEMICAL THERMODYNAMICS. It is fine that you have dedicated it to the memory of Roscoe Dickinson.

I have read some parts, looking for something to complain about. So far I haven't found anything of this sort; instead, I have found several items that are, so far as I am aware, new in books of this sort, and that seemed to me to be excellent.

I am continuing my work on nuclear structure, especially the explanation of magnetic dipole moments of nuclei. So far I have found a few interesting things, but I am still having difficulty in explaining moments in general. Also, I am working on a project at the Center, that of developing a rational system of moral principles. Frank Catchpool is coming here for three days, to participate in our conferences on this subject.

    Sincerely,
    Linus Pauling
