    Professor V. G. Drozin

    Department of Physics

    Bucknell University

    Lewisburg, Pennsylvania

    Dear Professor Drozin:

I am pleased to recommend Dr. Richard La Force for the position of associate professor of physics at Bucknell University.

I have known Dr. La Force from the time when he was an outstandingly able freshman student in the California Institute of Technology. He showed more originality and initiative than any other student in the class, in my opinion, and, of course, this class contained many very able young men.

He worked for me as research fellow, on problems of theoretical physics dealing with the structure of metals and alloys, a few years ago. I have no doubt that he is an unusually able and well-trained physicist, who could handle the work as associate professor of physics. His interests are broad, and he has shown considerable originality in his work.

It is my opinion that his character is excellent. I have no heard anything against him in recent years. I have always felt that the trouble that he got into as an undergraduate was not his fault, but was the result of an idealistic decision on his part, taken to protect another person.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling
