    Professor Glen A. Russell

    Department of Chemistry

    Iowa State University

    Ames, Iowa

    Dear Professor Russell:

I have been interested to see the note by you, Geels and Konaka on Restricted Rotation in Azobenzene and Nitrosobenzene Radical-Anions.

I am writing to comment on one small matter. In your structural formulas you show a double bond between N and O (or N end N), as well as a dot to represent the odd electron.

I think that another representation night be preferable. In your structural formula for nitrosobenzene anion, for example, you might show six more electrons, as a tare on N and 2 tares on 0. With the double bond (and the single bond from nitrogen to benzene), all four orbitals are used for N and four for O, leaving no orbital for occupancy by the odd electron. This seems to me to be undesirable.

A possible structural formula is one with a single bond between N and O, an unshared pair and the odd electron on N, and 3 unshared pairs on O (which would then carry the negative formal charge). Another possibility, of course, is to interchange the odd electron and one of the unshared pairs.

I, of course, in accordance with my 1931 discussion (JACS 53, 3225 (1931)), would show N and 0 connected by a single bond plus a 3-electron bond, represented by 3 dots in a row. The 3-electron bond makes use of one orbital from N and one orbital from O. N has one unshared pair, and O has two unshared pairs. There is, of course, some resonance of the odd electron on to the ring.

I am pleased to learn about the interesting results that you have obtained about restricted rotation in these anions.

    Sincerely yours,
    Linus Pauling
