    Dr. Ralph J. Bunche

    United Nations Building

    New York, New York

    Dear Dr. Bunche:

I thank you for your letter of 6 April. I, of course, understand that as an official of the United Nations Secretariat you would not sign the petition that I sent.

I must tell you that my opinion about the rights and duties of recipients of the Nobel Prize differs from yours — you say in your letter that you have always considered it inadvisable for Nobel Peace Prize winners to presume to act as a group. I am not sure what you mean by "as a group"; there is, of course, no question of actions of some recipients of the Nobel Prize being binding on the others. However, recipients of the Nobel Prize have joined together in taking action on many occasions. One important one was the issuance of the Mainau Declaration of Nobel Laureates, on 15 July 1955. This important public statement about peace was signed by 52 recipients of the Nobel Prize.

It is my opinion that recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize have even greater obligations in this respect than recipients of the Nobel Prize in science or medicine.

    Sincerely yours,

    mjh

    Linus Pauling
