  I enclose a copy of a letter that I have sent to the Postmaster General. After my telephone conversations with you, in which you said that the end of the delivery service was at Gorda, and that there was nothing that you could do about it, I decided that I should take this action. I hope that you are given authorization to deliver our mail to Salmon Creek. This would reduce very much the danger that you spoke to me about, of our mail being stolen from the mailbox.

  After talking with you by telephone I noticed that I had misunderstood one of your statements. You said that you had heard over TV that I was in Washington, and I said that I had not been in Washington for a year. Recently the question of my coming to Washington, D. C. has been on my mind, and I had decided not to make the trip. I was, three weeks ago, in British Columbia and also in Seattle, Washington — I forgot about the State of Washington, which I had visited briefly, because I was concerned about the matter of the trip to Washington, D. C.

  I continue to be worried by the statement that you made to me over the telephone on Tuesday, 26 October, that mail has been stolen from mailboxes along California State Highway No, 1. Our mailbox is 8 miles from our home at Salmon Creek, and it is impossible for us to keep an eye on it. Also, it is impossible for us to collect the mail every day, because we are not in residence at Salmon Creek every day and our caretaker does not drive a car. If the mail were to be delivered to Salmon Creek, he could remove the mail from the box immediately after delivery every day, and in this way prevent mail from being stolen. I shall be grateful to you for your help with this matter.

  Enclosed herewith is the book of acknowledgements from the gifts of the Architecture of Molecules which Gerry Piel sent to the various captains of industry. Stan mentioned this in his letter of November 4th and asked that I send it on to you and you will then send it to him.

  The MIT technology Review has taken a couple of plates to use as coworkers. I expect the first to appear in their November issue.

  I enjoyed your paper on the Close-Packed-Spheron Theory and Nuclear Fission in the October 15th Science. Some of the structures you show seem to be old friends albeit in intermetallic compounds instead of nuclei.

  Do the 90-odd separately identified particles which come from breaking the nuclei into little bits represent varying amounts of nuclear "glue" which sticks to the little pieces? Perhaps they are simply pieces contaminated with packing-fraction energy turned back into matter. Could these small mass differences be a function of the number of intra nuclear bonds which are broken? I hope you don't mind my flights of fancy.

  I also was interested in the new ice structure which Barclay has published. This would make an interesting picture for some subsequent edition of something.

  On page 455 of The Nature of the Chemical Bond, there is the statement that the melting point of methane lies about 20 [degrees] higher than the expected value, and that the explanation of this is not known.

  I suggest that you and I publish a paper on the explanation of the high melting point of methane.

  In 1930 I published a paper in the Physical Review (36,430) in which I pointed out the in some crystals the molecules are carrying out rotational motion. Methane is mentioned as one example, and it is stated that above 20 [degrees] K, the methane molecules are rotating. We might say that the melting of methane takes place in two states: rotational melting at 20 [degrees] K and vibrational melting at the melting point of the high-temperature crystals, 89 [degrees] K. We might argue that the melting point that the crystals would have if the molecules did not rotate would be in between the two values. You might think about melting point in relation to entropy change on melting, for substances such as the noble gasses [sic]and also for silane and other tetrahydrides, and see whether or not you can develop a reasonable and simple theory of the melting point.

  Also, would you look through the literature from 1930 to the present time, to see what you can learn about the rotational motion of methane molecules in the high temperature form of the crystals. I think that something was published rather recently in the Journal of Chemical Physics, but I am not sure that I remember correctly. I know that there are some older papers, dealing with both ordinary methane and methane containing deuterium.

  You might find it worthwhile to plot the melting point against the mole refraction, in extrapolating to methane.

  I have the opinion that my statement that the melting point of methane is 20 [degrees] high is too conservative, and that I should have said 50 [degrees] high. I note that for several pairs in figure 12-2 the differences of melting points are nearly the same as the differences of boiling points. If we accept this for methane and silane, then the melting point of methane is about 50 [degrees] high than expect.

  I suggest that you have Xerox copies prepared of any interesting papers on methane. Perhaps you would like to write a preliminary draft of a paper on this subject that you and I might publish together.

  I am writing to report on the progress of my manuscript on The Chemical Bond.

  I have now finished the manuscript. Most of it is in the form of pages, or portions of pages, from The Nature of the Chemical Bond, pasted on sheets of paper. There is a good bit of other material, however, that is now being typed, and the completed manuscript will be ready in about one week.

  I have in general retained the style and wording of the earlier book. I think that it is not too difficult for undergraduates. I have written some new material, especially a discussion of the molecular-orbital method. Also, I have added exercises at the ends of the chapters. I have deleted essentially all footnotes, except at the beginning of the first chapter.

  I have deleted very much material from the later chapters, and have omitted chapter 13 entirely (ionic crystals).

  I estimate that the book would contain 250 pages; 200 pages of text, 25 pages for the 75 figures, 10 pages for exercises and references, and 10 pages for index and front matter.

  Seventy-five figures with their legends as in the larger book would occupy about 40 pages. I think that almost all of the figures could be cut down to half their present size. Many of the figures occur in pairs, so that two could be put side by side on the same page. Perhaps you would be willing to have type set up in short lines (half the width of the page) at the side of other figures.

  For example, on page 137 there are figures 4-8 and 4-9. These could be reproduced half-size and put side by side. Also, the figures on page 52 and 53 have been reproduced on different scales. I think that they could be cut down to half-page width and put side by side. The figures on page 39 and 40 could well be smaller, and side by side.

  I shall send the manuscript to you before long.

  Mommy and I were happy to receive your letter. We have been worried about not hearing from you.

  I enclose my check for $500 for the Penguins. I shall plan to send another $500 in a few months.

  I look forward to receiving the list of your publications and manuscripts. I enclose the only reprint that I have got so far. You no doubt saw the letter in Nature. I shall send a set of reprints to you when they are available.

  I am going to give four lectures on nuclear structure in Pomona College the end of February. It is a special lectureship, requiring that the manuscript for a book be submitted, and I plan to prepare a small book on nuclear structure. They have a contract with W. H. Freeman & Company for publications.

  Also, during the last month I have trimmed down The Nature of the Chemical Bond to about 40 percent of its size, so that a paperback can be put out for student use.

  We like our new house very much, but there are a lot of things to be done to it. Mama pointed out that there was a crack about one-sixteenth inch wide and eight feet long, running vertically, at the end of the hall — really, the living room. It is a place where studs come together at an angle, and the carpenters just put these redwood boards next to one another, without any caulking. In fact, I found several places where there were cracks between rooms end the outside, sometimes over a quarter of an inch wide (under beams).

  We like having electricity, hot water, and so on. My big desk, which I have had for 35 years, is in my study at the ranch, and I prepared this new little book on it.

  I have in mind trying to grow some crystals at the ranch — some structures I am interested in. I have a shop there, for making molecular models, but not set up as a chemistry laboratory.

  We left the ranch five days ago, just as it was beginning to rain. There has been about three inches of rain in the whole of southern California during these days. We probably shell go up again in a couple of days.

  Dear Messrs. Moody and Thomas:

  I apologize for the delay in answering your letter of last November, which arrived while I was in Australia, and then escaped my attention.

  In my 1961 paper on anesthesia I made a statement that reflected the state of knowledge at that time, namely, "Xenon is completely unreactive chemically. It has no ability whatever to form ordinary chemical compounds, involving covalent or ionic bonds."

  In this article, about anesthesia, I was thinking of the possibility that xenon would undergo reaction under the conditions inside the human body. I did not think that it was worth while for me to discuss there the general problem of chemical reactivity of xenon, with, for example, the element fluorine. I had formed the opinion thirty years earlier, on the basis of theoretical arguments, that xenon should form certain compounds. My theoretical arguments were rather simple ones, involving extrapolation from the behavior of other elements, close by in the periodic table.

  I had got a sample of xenon from a friend and I asked my colleague Professor Don M. Yost if he would see whether it would combine with fluorine — he had been doing some work with fluorine. When he and Mr. Kay reported a negative result, I decided that the rate of reaction might be small, or the equilibrium more unfavorable than I had anticipated. I continued to hold to this opinion over later years, when no other investigator had reported that he had prepared any fluorine or oxygen compounds of xenon, or any other compounds, except the clathrate compounds.

  I do not remember having discussed in any thoroughgoing way the question of chemical reactivity of xenon, at any time after 1933. I am sure that if I had been asked whether or not I thought that in the course of time some fluorine and oxygen compounds as xenon would be made, I would have answered yes.

  I apologize for the delay in answering your letter -- I am afraid that you have in the meantime published your book.
