  • Letter from David Langworthy to LP, RE: Langworthy would have been happier to sign and circulate the petition if it had been addressed to the United States government, and not signed by citizens of foreign governments.  He wonders how non-American citizens feel they have the right to address a foreign government; he would not expect the French government, for instance, to listen to him.  He doesn’t fully believe that the petition will help bring a stop to the spread of nuclear weapons, but it has made him feel somewhat better. • Letter from David W. Walker to LP, RE: On behalf of the Fellowship of Reconciliation group of Puerto Rico, Walker thanks LP for the copy of LP's record, Atomic War and Nuclear Fallout. The record was particularly helpful in presenting the mechanism of gene damage to the non-scientifically oriented members of the group. The group would like to place the record in several libraries so that it might reach a wider audience. The group would also like have a Spanish translation of the record, so they wonder if one already exists, or if they could obtain a manuscript to translate themselves. They would like to record the Spanish translation as well. Would it be possible to obtain permission from the record company which holds the copyright in order to do this? The group would also be interested in any further information LP could supply regarding nuclear fallout. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1960, 1962), #445.2]

    11 April 1961

    Dear Harvey,

I too have been disturbed by the way in which Vernon Ingram writes his papers, and his last paper in Nature seemed to me to be worse than the earlier ones.

I think that a letter to Nature is called for.

If you feel that it is worth while to have me associated with you, I would be willing to sign the letter.

In addition to the points that you mention, I have been disturbed by Ingram's failure on occasion to refer to our paper of 1949.

Why don't you prepare a draft of the paper to Nature? If you would like me to be a coauthor with you (Itano and Pauling), let me see the draft before it is submitted.

    Sincerely yours,

    [Linus Pauling]
