    Professor W. G. McMillan

    Chemistry Department

University of California at Los Angeles

    Westwood, California

    Dear McMillan:

I have read with interest your article with Latter, which has just appeared.

There is one point about it that I should like to mention, in order to have your opinion. It seems to me that the volume compressibility of zinc, cadmium, and mercury is not very significant to your calculation, because of the extreme anisotropy of the compressibility ellipsoid.

Also, there is another question that I should like to ask. What do you get for the number of three electrons when you apply your treatment to diamine? I could, of course, carry out the calculation myself, but I think that it is better for me to ask what you have got from this calculation, because I might make a mistake. I have a feeling that you have found that a value of about two agrees with the compressibility of diamine, rather than four, and I shall look forward to hearing from you about your result.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:JH
