    9 May, 1958

    Dearest Mamma,

If it is convenient, can you please send me the advertised descriptions of some American household consumer goods? I am interested in buying some labour saving devices like a washing machine and a refrigerator and a stove and perhaps a dryer and maybe a vacuum cleaner and I shall try to buy second hand stuff from the American forces here. I am not sure I can do it, but it is probable. Washing machines I have seen advertised in personal column of Forces paper: Bendix-Dialmatic; Maytag, wringertype; Bendix automatic and agitator type; Norge; Kenmore (Sears Sawbuck).

Refrigerators: Westinghouse 9.2 cf; Coldspot 11 cf Crosley; Shelvedor 9 cf.

    Bendix dryer and Electrolux cleaner.

I wish I could find a nice place to live. Thomas plays outside a good deal with the little neighbor children who are older than he and take care of him. I really wish to move into town if possible but it is probably impossible.

We planned to go on a holiday in July and to see the Dunitz's in Zurich for scientific consultation on our way home. They have got a flat for us from their neighbor who are conveniently going away just at the right time which is certainly very nice.

    Love from

    Peter

    Dear Max:

In answer to your letter, I may say that I would be delighted to sign a certificate of nomination of Kendrew and of Crick to the Royal Society. I would put them in this order - that is, Kendrew first.

I shall be in Pasadena pretty steadily from now until the middle of August.

My wife and I too were pleased to learn about Peter's having a lectureship in University College.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    13 May 1958

    Dear Peter:

Thanks for the manuscript. I have been so busy the last couple of days that I haven't been able to go over it, but I shall do so after getting back from Washington. Mamma and I are going there tomorrow, in order that I may appear on a TV program, called Meet the Press, on Sunday.

I enclose a letter that came from the Treasury Department. It looks as though it contains a check.

Linda is in the same shape--perhaps slightly larger shape. She is feeling very well.

    Much love from

Diatated on 9 May by Linus Pauling

    Signed in his absence:W
