  I have been very pleased to receive your letter and the accompanying material.

  I like very much the description that you give of a new economic and social system based on the age-old principle of the golden rule of reciprocity. If it were only possible to get everyone in every nation to respect this rule, the many problems that we have now in the world would be capable of rapid solution.

  Your long letter to Mr. Cyrus Eaton has impressed me greatly. It contains many good ideas and many really significant facts. I am grateful to you for having sent me a copy of this letter.

  As to the reply that you received to your letter to Mr. Eaton, I must say that I judge that Mr. Eaton is very busy, especially with his extensive businesses, and it may well be that he receives a great amount of mail. He probably has come to rely greatly upon his secretary. Moreover, I have the feeling that he does not attempt to study thoroughly the many detailed problems that the world faces now. I think that he is making a great contribution, but in a different way from you.

  Let me thank you again for your letter and for the material that you sent with it.

  Dear Erv:

  I am writing about the possibility of my getting some penicillin from you.

  For about ten years I have been plagued by nearly continuous difficulty with my sinuses. Just as soon as I get my sinuses cleared up, after two or three months, I am apt to come down with another bad cold, and start the sinus trouble again.

  Now my physician has recommended that I go on to a course of penicillin therapy for one year, to see whether this will handle the problem. He is going to have me take one tablet of 400,000 units each day.

  I am writing to you because the retail price of 400 tablets, the amount that I would need for one year, is pretty high. Would it be possible for you to arrange for me to get these tablets, 400,000 units each, any type of penicillin, at a lowered cost?

  I know that this sort of continued penicillin therapy is unusual. My physician has been interested in it, and is publishing a paper on his experience with it in certain types of disease, such as nephritis. Of course, my kidneys seem to be in good shape now, but I think that he is interested in controlling my sinusitis because of possible effect on my kidneys also, in case that the chronic condition continues.

  Dear President DuBridge:

  I have discussed your letter of 15 July 1958, about the appointment of Dr. Richard W. Lippman, with Professor Ernest H. Swift.

  I pointed out to Professor Swift the great difficulty in obtaining the services of an able research man with medical training in connection with our Ford Foundation program of research on chemistry in relation to mental disease and the serious problem that would be raised in connection with my research if I could not continue to have Dr. Lippman as my right-hand man in this work. During the past two years Dr. Lippman has become more and more effective in these activities, and I am counting on him for the future.

  The work that Dr. Lippman does here (and at Pacific State Hospital) is in my opinion suitable for the title of Medical Consultant and for a non-faculty status, inasmuch as it does not overlap with teaching or general research activities. Professor Swift has pointed out that there might be some justification for giving him the title of Research Associate, but I do not believe that this is necessary.

  Dear Peter:

  Mommie and I have been pleased to hear about your experiences in Spain.

  We had a pleasant 10 days at the ranch. I managed to get a couple of chapters of the Nature of the Chemical Bond revised. Now I am half through the job but it is clear that I shall not be able to finish it this summer, and shall have to postpone the date for submitting the manuscript until about the end of the calendar year. Tomorrow (25 July) we are going to Spokane, where we shall see Aunt Elisabeth. I am giving a talk in the Unitarian church there, and then we go to Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland, where I am to give similar talks. After we get back I think we shall be able to spend another week or so at the ranch, and then take off for Europe.

  I have just received an invitation from Lowdin to take part in a special meeting in connection with his International Summer School in Quantum Chemistry. It will be in Valadalen, 25 to 30 August. I have accepted, in part because I think that it will be of value in connection with the revision of the Nature of the Chemical Bond. Mamma and I are not sure as to when we will arrive in London. We might come on 31 August, or we might not arrive until 3 September. In either case, I think that you should arrange to hire a car for the month. I believe that we'll be doing enough traveling to justify the expense. It would be all right to have it begin 31 August. Could we take it on the boat to Ireland?

  Dear Lowdin:

  I thank you very much for your letter of 22 July, and the invitation to me to take part in the last week of the International Summer School in Quantum Chemistry in Vålådalen.

  I have wanted very much to take part in this meeting, but I have had difficulty in getting my plans made for the summer. Now that they are in shape, I am glad to accept your invitation.

  My wife and I are scheduled to leave Los Angeles the night of Saturday 23 August, arriving in Stockholm at 7 A.M. on Monday 25 August. The best information that I can get here in Pasadena is that we could leave Stockholm at 8:05 A.M. on Linjeflug 172, arriving at Ostersend at 10:40 A.M. From Ostersend we could take a train at 1:50 P.M. and arrive in Undersaker at 3:46 P.M. Then, I believe, we would have to take a postal bus for the remainder of the way to Vålådalen. If there is some more direct way of reaching Vålådalen from Stockholm, will you please let me know. If the polar flight were later in reaching Stockholm on 25 August, it might not be possible to get to Vålådalen that same day. In any case, I suppose that I would miss your special panel meeting on the first day.

  I assume that the conference will last through Saturday 30 August, and that we could proceed to London on Sunday 31 August.

  I have been preparing a third edition of my book THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND, and have some new considerations to include in the book. These might be suitable to discussion during part of the meeting.

  I trust that it will be all right for my wife to come along, and to stay in Vålådalen during the period of the meeting. We can, of course, pay for her lodging during this period.
