    14 August 1958

    To: Dr. Lippman

    From: Linus Pauling

    Subject: Work by Dr. Motulsky

Dr. Arne Motulsky, in the Department of Medical Genetics of the University of Washington, together with someone in Oregon, discovered a disease in mice that is very closely similar to sperocytosis in man. It is a recessive disease, whereas in humans it is dominant. Motulsky thinks that it may be explained by the more rapid evolution of mice. He and his co-workers are attempting to cure the disease in mice by making bone marrow transplants.

Also, they have been working on the liver defect that causes favism.

He gave me a reference to a paper by a man named Kalow, in the Canadian Journal of Biochemistry and Physiology. Kalow has found that 3% of people in Canada are heterozygotes, deficient in cholinesterase. He says that he has been able to detect the abnormal enzyme.
