  • Letter from Arthur B. Simon, W.H. Freeman and Company, Publishers, to Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP, RE: The German publisher of General Chemistry has asked for the same originals that could not be located for the Spanish publisher in December. These originals, mostly electron micrographs, were returned at LP's request. Perhaps LP can be of some help in finding them. Sends the original figures for General Chemistry, Second Edition, to Foerst. [Letter from Wulf to Simon April 14, 1955] [Filed under LP Books: (General Chemistry: An Introduction to Descriptive Chemistry and Modern Chemical Theory, Second Edition), #1953b.1]
  • Letter from Dr. Caroline F. Ware, International Commission for a Scientific and Cultural History of Mankind, to LP RE: Appreciates LP's willingness to act as a consultant for the 20th century volume of "History of the Scientific and Cultural Development of Mankind." Encloses the preliminary plan for the volume, and notes for one section. Describes general plans for various sections. [Letter from LP to Corner March 31, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #444.3]
  • Letter from Dr. D.B. Clapp, Associated Ethyl Company Limited, to LP RE: Congratulates LP on receiving the Nobel Prize. Unable to visit the U.S. last year and has no plans for a trip soon. Greatly enjoyed browsing through LP's General Chemistry. Encloses a note regarding the work being carried out by Dr. Grove under Clapp's direction. Describes his own work. [Letter from LP to Clapp September 1, 1955] [Filed under LP Books: (General Chemistry: An Introduction to Descriptive Chemistry and Modern Chemical Theory, Second Edition), #1953b.5]
  • Letter from Dr. G. Stein, The Hebrew University, Israel, to LP RE: Hopes that LP and AHP have recovered from their strenuous visit to Stein's home. Encloses a print which Dr. Henisch sent from England to be forwarded to LP. [Letter from LP to Stein May 25, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from H.B. Travel Agency, Pasadena, California, to Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP, RE: Lists fares for LP's flights from New York to San Juan via Miami, San Juan to Miami, and Miami to Los Angeles. [Letter from de Cruz to LP April 5, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.9]
  • Letter from Joy Belden to LP RE: Thanks LP for expanding her horizons through his recent speech at the Women's City Club. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1955-1957), #38.1]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Charles A. Thomas, Jr., RE: Dr. Beadle has talked with LP about the possibility of Thomas working at Caltech. Would be pleased to have Thomas in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Dr. Vinogard is interested in the size and shape of DNA molecules. Dr. Corey and LP are interested in the molecular structure of the molecule, concentrating on the precise structures of the structural units, phosphate esters, and nucleotides. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (E: Organizational Correspondence. (Ea - Ex)), #111.4]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Charles L. Beckel, Physics Dept., Georgetown University, RE: Responds to request for advice on the importance of performing vibrational analyses of several potential curves for the ground state of the hydrogen molecule. A student named Bruchner is performing a similar study on the nitrogen molecule. Results have not been very encouraging so far, and do not indicate the rapid convergence of vibrational levels that LP had expected. LP does not think that the hydrogen molecule would be a good one to investigate because the normal state of the hydrogen atom is essentially the valence state of the atom in the molecule. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1955-1957), #38.1]
  • Letter from LP to Mrs. Auge, RE: Peter Gentzel, who plans to apply for a graduate assistantship in chemistry next year, is primarily interested in organic chemistry, though he has not yet taken a course in physical chemistry. LP believes that Gentzel would be an excellent teacher. If his grades justify it, he should be given an assistantship. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (G: Correspondence, 1936-1956)), #140.19]
