  • Letter from members of the chemistry department to AL Strand, President, Oregon State College RE: Discusses the attitude used in response to LP's letter is harmful to the department professionally as he is the president of the American Chemical Society. Although they recognize his privilege to reject the recommendations of Dr. Pauling, their opinion is that the general tenor of his reply is detrimental to the national academic standing of this college because the reputation of the department and its graduates depend upon the approval of the ACS. They bring up the fact the ACS is undertaking a survey of chemistry departments to determine qualifications and feel Strand's letter affects the appraisal of the Oregon State chemistry department. Feel they may profit from the advice and assistance of the ACS and LP.
