Says the importance of the letter from Spitzer to Chemical and Engineering News was that it “served as final confirmation to a conclusion long since reached” and “showed beyond question that he was devoted to Communist party policy”. Regarding academic freedom, he feels he is acting in the direction of such freedom because he is protecting “at least one prerogative of college administration–that of being allowed to choose permanent members of the academic staff”. Says that if he has lost LP's respect and support, “all I can say is that your price is too high. We'll Have to get along without your aid”.
