  Dear Mrs. Smolt:

  I thank you for your letter and the clipping about the proposed atomic energy plant at Point Conception.

  You probably know that I have devoted myself to the struggle against war, including nuclear war. This has been such a time-consuming activity that I have not found it possible to make a thorough study of the problems associated with nuclear power plants. I believe that these nuclear power plants are dangerous, and in particular that they should not be built in populated areas.

  A special danger in California is the danger of a nuclear catastrophe following an earthquake. Two of the proposed nuclear power plants have been given up because of the opposition of citizens groups and scientists. One of these plants was planned for a site about forty miles north of San Francisco. Professor J. B. Neilands of the University of California at Berkeley was active in the fight against this plant. The other was the Malibu plant, near Los Angeles. Professor Barclay Kamb of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, was the geological expert involved in the successful fight against this plant. I do not know what the situation is at Point Conception, but I think that there is the possibility that a plant there would be just as dangerous as one at Malibu. This is a matter that ought to be looked into by the people in Santa Barbara and adjacent communities, who might well suffer from damage by radioactive substances released in case that there were an accident at the plant.

  Dear Peter:

  We are looking forward to seeing you in October. Our schedule is complicated by our decision to go to Warsaw for the Centenary celebration of the birth of Marie Sklodowska-Curie, and I am writing to ask if you would approve the following proposal.

  We expect to arrive in London at 6:40 AM on Sunday 15 October, on BOAC Flight 600, which leaves Toronto at 7:00 PM Saturday l4 October. Then we are scheduled to catch the Polish Airlines Flight 246 for Warsaw, leaving at 12:45 PM on Sunday October 15. This gives us only six hours in London, with a good bit of the time required for the airport and for transportation to town. Could you rent a car, pick us up at the airport at about 7:30 AM on Sunday, and then return us to the airport at noon? This would give us a chance to see you and Julia and the children, although only for a short time.

  Then, would it be possible for you to arrange to come to Montpellier for a few days, to stay with us? We shall arrive in Montpellier on Sunday 22 October and leave on 10 or 11 November, flying directly to California. We are going to be staying in the Zuckerkandl's apartment, and they have told us that there would be room for you, too. The Zuckerkandls themselves will be staying in another place.

  There is the possibility that our schedule can be rearranged somewhat, but we are obligated to stay in Montpellier during this period of three weeks, and the Marie Curie celebration will take up the extra time that we thought we would have on this trip.

  Today I am going down to La Jolla, to look for a house or apartment for us during the next nine months. Mamma is staying in Santa Barbara, in order to do some packing and get other jobs done.

  Dear Mr. Evans:

  I thank you for your letter, in which you mention the statements that I made on radio station KLAC.

  I do not know whether you misunderstood or whether I was careless in formulating my thoughts. I remember, of course, the bombing or London from the air by Germany during World War I, and also the buzz-bomb and aerial attacks by Germany during World War II, and attacks such as that on Rotterdam. The point that I was trying to make is that the United States and Great Britain decided, during World War II, to try to bring the war with Germany to an end by the very heavy bombing of German cities, rather than primarily of military targets.

  On page 18 of his book Fear, War, and the Bomb, P. M. S. Blackett quotes the principal Assistant Secretary of the Air Ministry of Britain in his book Bombing Vindicated as claiming the credit to Great Britain for introducing as a main strategic policy the area attack on cities. "It has been the British way of using air power which has revolutionized war."

  During the period August 1940 to May 1941 British bombers dropped 20,000 tons of bombs on Germany, killing about 0.15 persons per ton of bombs, and with unmeasurably small effect on German production. The German reply started in September 1940 and continued until May 1941. Fifty thousand tons of bombs were dropped on Great Britain, killing 40,00C citizens, 0.8 per ton. During 1944 and 1945 the British and American aerial bombing of Germany was at the average rate of 100,000 tons a month.

  During five months beginning in March 1945, about 100,000 tons of bombs were dropped on cities in Japan, and about 60,000 tons on specific military and industrial targets. The 100,000 tons dropped on ci.1ies destroyed about three million houses. The death rate in Japan from the bombing of cities was about 1.3 per ton.

  I suppose that we can say that there was a gradual development of the idea of area bombing of cities. Probably the credit for adopting this as a principal policy is to be given to Great Britain.

  Dear Mamma,

  Thank you for your letter. I look forward to seeing you on the 15th October and visiting you in Montpelier. I think I can arrange the latter.

  I have been feeling pretty blue. Julia is anxious for me to move out and I did so the 17th into a flat of a colleague who is away. On the 10th September I start sharing a flat with a painter. It is not ideal but I guess it will work more or less all right.

  I do not know whether it is worth it to go all the way to California for Christmas. I would like to visit again and would like to be with you all for a while but it is an awful lot of money. That amount of money would make a big difference to the sort of flat I lived in and I am not sure it is sensible to have this sort of shooting stars in one's life. It would be fun though. Perhaps I can arrange a lecture tour sometime in the next few years. In a year or two I will have a good story I think on nervous transmission. I do not feel much like a lot of travel at the moment. Too much last year and I am too blue.

  I spent six days in Denmark, in a little village called Skagen at the uppermost tip of Jutland. Do you remember putting me on a ship in Copenhagen in 1953? I went to the same place and saw the same people. I do not much like Nina's two little boys though; too spoiled. I do not know whether you knew her husband was killed three years ago in a motor car. They were living in Morocco. She has had quite a rough time. She has moved back to Denmark and has a job teaching in a kindergarten.
