  Here is a first draft of a paper that I may publish.

  If you have any ideas about it that you think would be interesting to me, please write.

  I must say that I feel that the few cents a day involved in glutamic acid feeding (L (+)-glutamic acid costs less than one cent per gram) might well be expended, to see whether or not mentally retarded people are helped. The treatment needs to be carried on for six months or a year before a decision is made about its value. Probably, if it is valuable, it should be continued permanently for the patient.

  Dear Petie,

  We left home on the 31st of December and spend New Year’s Eve with Linnie in Honolulu. Stayed there until the 4th and came on here via Guam, Manila, Saigon, Singapore, Madras.

  We shall go home via Honolulu, too, and see Linnie again*. He is not too well and spent the week before Christmas in the hospital. I hope he is better now.

  It is hot here and muggy but pleasant none the less. Dorothy Hodgkin arrived this afternoon. I haven’t seen her yet.

  We have been having a busy time. It is interesting, too. I really can’t see any future for India unless they change drastically. It is sad. The women do a lot here.

  I’ve given two talks and have really seen more than the Paddy. We’ve seen some interesting people. I’ve read a book or two by Bertrand Russell. One called The Conquest of Happiness. What a remarkable and wise man he is. I wish I had read this book long ago.

  How are you? How is Julia? Has she recovered from her gout? Was it gout? There is a beautiful coastline and beach here at Madras – the Bay of Bengal.

  Peter in my letter I forgot to tell you about a grand nephew of mine named Steven Parks. The son of Better Brown Parks – my niece who is a lawyer in Washington D.C. and who was adopted as a baby by my eldest sister Blanche Miller Brown who died about 20 years ago. You won’t remember all of this. However, this boy is in Oxford at school – not yet at the University I think. He must be 18 or 19 however and it is one of these exchange affairs.

  Anyway he may call you or write and I’d you to be prepared. I’ve kept in touch with Betty all of these years and we see her when we go to Washington D.C. She is a bright person. I forgot to bring her address with me. He may spell his name Stephen, too. I just don’t remember. Betty wrote to me at Christmas time and I sent her address but didn’t get this letter off to you.
