    Mr. Royce Howes, Associate Editor

    The Detroit Free Press

    Detroit 31, Michigan

    Dear Mr. Howes:

Mr. David J. Vogt has sent me your reply to his letter of 24 June.

My attention had already been drawn to your editorial of 23 June, and I am writing to express to you my appreciation of the stand that you have taken.

I am, of course, troubled by my present situation. I do not like the prospect of being cited for contempt of Congress, nor do I like the prospect of going to jail for my beliefs. But I am willing to suffer the consequences of my actions.

    Sincerely yours,

    Dictated by Professor Pauling

    Signed in his absence: jh
