- Letter from Dr. Robert B. Corey, Caltech, to Dr. Otto K. Behrens, Director, Biochemical Research Division, Eli Lilly Research Laboratories, RE: Will be interested to hear about Dr. Davisson's results in effort to produce glucagon crystals suitable for x-ray photography. Believes that the experienced personnel at Lilly Research Laboratories are more likely to be successful in growing the crystals than if Corey and his associates tried it at Caltech. Will later be desirable to grow crystals containing glucagon together with heavy ions; perhaps Caltech personnel might take on that job. Requests one or two grams of a well-characterized preparation of pure insulin for use in the growth of suitable crystals. This would be used in efforts to determine the complete structure of insulin. - Letter from LP to Dr. Heinrich Heesch, Kiel, Germany, RE: Pleased to learn the news about Heesch's Lehrauftrag in Hannover. Perhaps Heesch will be able to give lectures on more general mathematical subjects later on. Interested to learn about the work that has been done by Mr. Winn and others on the four-color problem. LP and AHP's children are away from home now, except for Crellin, who is in college and has come home for Christmas vacation. Last month, Karl Bechart visited. - Letter from LP to Dr. Robert E. Williams, Phi Lambda Upsilon, Chemistry Dept., Oklahoma A and M College, RE: Regrets that he is unable to accept the invitation to deliver the O.M. Smith Lecture this year. Has so many other engagements for the coming six months that he cannot fit a visit to Oklahoma into his schedule. [Letter from Williams to LP December 15, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #444.3]
- Letter from LP to Dr. W. H. Eberhardt, Georgia Institute of Technology, RE: Looks forward to hearing comments from Eberhardt on second edition of College Chemistry. Does not plan to revise the textbook again for at least four years. Will post bulletin about GIT's School of Chemistry. Not sure that any students will apply, as Caltech has very few this year. Disappointed that several of the more talented students have decided not to go on in chemistry. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (E: Individual Correspondence. (Eastman - Eide)), #106.3]
