  • Letter from LP to Dr. Irvin Fuhr, Executive Secretary, Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry Study Section, Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health, RE: Received check for $57.24 to cover travel expenses in connection with the meeting in Berkeley on December 1. Noticed that the calculation on the cost of transportation contained an error. Has repeated the calculation on the back of the form, which is enclosed. The reported distance is 1386 kilometers, which then multiplied by 0.621 gives 861 miles, corresponding at 8 cents per mile, to $68.88, $50.64 greater than the sum indicated on the form itself. Has already deposited the check so cannot return it. [Letter from LP to Fuhr December 29, 1955, Letter from Lowe to LP January 20, 1956] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (N: Organizational Correspondence. (National Institute of Health)), #285.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Jacob L. Rycus, Academic Secretary, The Weizmann Institute of Science, RE: Pleased to express approval of the proposed nomination of Dr. Gerhard M. J. Schmidt for head of the new x-ray crystallography department at Weizmann. Pleased that Weizmann plans to expand its x-ray crystallography program, as this area of science is becoming increasingly important. Expresses high opinion of Schmidt and his work. If possible, Caltech would be glad to have him work at Caltech for a year. [Letter from Rycus to LP December 18, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Organizational Correspondence. (Wa - Wo)), #441.4]
