  Dear Mr. Butcher:

  I have been interested to learn about your problem of determining the oxygen in a gaseous mixture containing the atmospheric gases and a high concentration of carbon dioxide.

  I do not see any reason why the oxygen meter that we developed during the war, which is now manufactured by the A. O. Beckman Company, should not provide a solution of your problem. The volume of 20 or 25 ml of gas available for a single test is large enough, and it should be possible to standardize the apparatus for the conditions under which you would use it in such a way that the oxygen could be determined with considerable accuracy, probably to within 0.1% of the amount of oxygen present. I am sure that the A. O. Beckman Company(820 Mission Street, South Pasadena, California) can give you advice on this point.

  I thank you very much for your kind letter of January 8. I am pleased that you liked my talk about the structure of proteins.

  As to your question about the genic basis of differences in the structure of protein complexes, I am sure that the answer can be made that it is well substantiated that in fact these differences in structure of different proteins are due to differences in the genes. We have produced evidence, and other people also have, to show that the difference between sickle cell anemia hemoglobin and normal hemoglobin is the result of a difference in a single gene. In many other cases the correlation between relatively small changes in protein structure and the existence of different alleles has been shown.

  I do not see how you can avoid doing work of this sort; it seems to me to be clearly your duty, in view of you experience. Also, despite the policy of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering about carrying on fundamental research, which would remain unclassified, I feel that the circumstances necessitate serious consideration of your proposal. I think that the time has come when an exception to the policy will have to be made, as it was made during the period of World War II.

  There is only one point on which I would like to have assurance: that the work that is proposed is the most valuable work that you, with your ability, training, and experience, and Dean Lacey could undertake.

  I am telling you what I think about the ad on COLLEGE CHEMISTRY with some hesitation. I am not at all sure that the thought that occurs to me would occur to anyone else.

  On looking at the ad and reading the legend "This picture, of course, shows the process of nuclear fission. But, it Might also illustrate the way Linus Pauling's COLLEGE CHEMISTRY has hit American colleges. Has this chain reaction reached you?" I ask myself what the meaning of the picture is with respect to an American college. The answer that I get from myself is that Linus Pauling's COLLEGE CHEMISTRY has a disrupting effect on American colleges. For example, perhaps it is responsible for scraps between different groups of the chemistry faculty - those who want to use the book and those who do not. Whatever the disrupting effect is, it seems to me that it would be undesirable.

  Accordingly, I have to report that I do not have much enthusiasm for the ad.

  Let me say again that I am not at all sure that my feeling about the matter is important.

  The formula of sodium paratungstate, by K. Saddington and R. W. Cahn, J. Chem. Soc.,1950, 3526.

  X-ray diffraction studies have been made of crystals of sodium paratungstate. It is found that the triclinic unit contains two molecules Na₁₀W₁₂O₄₁.28H₂O. There would be about 3.4 molecules of the alternative formula, Na₆W₇O₄.16 H₂O. It is suggested that work by Jander showing that there are complexes with a 5-fold negative charge in solution indicates that the formula is Na₅ [HW₆O₂₁]. 13½ H₂O.
