Horner Museum Oral History Collection, 1952-1993
The Horner Museum Oral History Collection consists of more than 250 oral history interviews conducted or assembled by the Horner Museum. The interviews address a variety of topics including the stories of Oregon State University faculty, students, and academic departments; the history of Corvallis and Benton County, Oregon; evolving economic and cultural perspectives on natural resources in rural Oregon; the life experiences of Native Americans and other ethnic minorities in the region; and the recollections of Americans born in the first few decades of the twentieth century.
All of the audiocassettes held in this collection have been digitized and these files are available upon patron request. Transcripts of the interview for Francis Brown (1980), Lena Hamblin (1988), and Norborne Berkeley (1983) have been digitized and are available upon request.
In its present form, the Horner Museum Oral History Collection is significantly smaller than was once the case, as many of the dedicated oral history projects conducted by the museum have been removed and described as distinct collections of their own. These collections include, either in part or in full:
Oregon Pioneers Oral History Collection (OH 01); Judith Carol Carlson Oral History Interview with Robert C. Ingalls (OH 02); History of Oregon State University Oral Histories and Sound Recordings (OH 03); Basques of Harney County, Oregon, Oral History Collection (OH 04); Oral History Interviews, Personal Histories, and Sound Recordings Collection on Agriculture, Forestry, and Oregon History (OH 05); Soap Creek Valley History Project Oral Histories (OH 06); A.L. - Series 2: Transcripts and Project Files, 1952-1992 Add to Shelf
The contents of the files held in Series II vary from folder to folder but, generally speaking, may contain rough transcripts of interviews and research materials compiled in preparation for interviews. More specifically, folders often contain preliminary and finalized transcripts of interviews - the latter occasionally published as a monograph - completed interviewer comment sheets noting first impressions of a completed interview; interview logs describing general themes discussed at specified points within an interview; and research materials compiled in preparation for an interview, typically including clippings and handwritten notes. The folders also sometimes contain biographical information collected at a point following an interview, newspaper obituaries being the most common item of this sort. Photographs, slides and negatives of interviewees, usually taken by Horner Museum staff at the time and location of an interview, are also arranged into this series' folders as appropriate. More details about most of these interviews are available in Series I of this finding aid.

- A report titled "Contemporary Lifestyles at Oregon State University," authored by Brad Cantor, Bene Schleuniger and Julie Christoferson, was compiled and submitted in 1981 to fulfill the requirements of an unidentified OSU class. The report sought to use analysis of oral history interviews to identify specific subcultures within the OSU student population and "to explore the possibility that each [subculture] might possess conflicting values." In so doing, the study focused on student attitudes toward controversial issues of the day, including recreational drug use, cohabitation and pre-marital sex. The report consists largely of transcripts of interviews conducted with the study's nine participants, as categorized by the authors into three groups: "The Organics," "Middle of the Road" and "The Greeks." - The DeMoss Family Lyric Bards, based in Eastern Oregon, traveled the United States, Canada and Europe for over sixty years (1872-1933) providing musical entertainment to diverse audiences. Led by James DeMoss, the family presented religious, classical and patriotic songs in an effort to spread the family's religious beliefs to a wider population. Jennifer Lee conducted three oral history interviews (Herschel Davis, Homer DeMoss, Beula Roach) documenting the family's story. She used this information in the writing of a lengthy biographical sketch. The Horner Museum also mounted an exhibit dedicated to the DeMoss family's music and travels. Horner accession number 991-1-21.

- Series 3: Administrative Records, 1973-1993 Add to Shelf
- A wide array of materials have been organized into the collection's Administrative Records series. Content held in this series includes card catalogs, interview abstracts, cataloging worksheets, accession files, progress reports, signed release forms and film negatives. The series also contains one box of "Assorted Project Files" which consist of notes, correspondence, research materials, forms and other items either collected or generated in support of the Horner Museum's oral history initiatives.
- Extent: 2 boxes
- Extent: 16 folders
- Box-Folder 19.1 - 19.2: Card Catalogs, undated Add to Shelf
- The two card catalogs arranged into this series contain two different sets of information. One card catalog itemizes the names and accession numbers of individuals interviewed under the umbrella of the Horner Museum's oral history program. The other card catalog contains information concerning individuals of interest to the museum's program. These latter records include the names and contact information of potential interviewees as well as brief biographical abstracts and references to those who referred a given name to the museum's staff.
- Box-Folder 19.3 - 19.9: Abstracts, circa 1992 Add to Shelf
- Series III contains a large volume of interview abstracts summarizing both the biography of a given interview subject as well as noteworthy points of discussion raised during their interview. Earlier iterations of the abstracts were either handwritten or typed onto index cards and paper scraps. The content was later compiled into a volume titled "Oral History Collection Abstracts, Horner Museum, 1978-1991," four rough copies of which are included in Series III.
- Box-Folder 19.10: Accession Sheets, circa 1988 Add to Shelf
- Typewritten accession sheets documenting acquisition dates, provenance, interviewer and interviewee data, number of cassettes and locations within the Horner Museum remain extant for interviews 979-1-1 to 988-1-9.
- Box-Folder 19.11 - 19.12: Cataloging Worksheets and Progress Logs, 1986-1992 Add to Shelf
- The Horner Museum used cataloging worksheets of their own design to record information about specific interviews as they worked their way through the museum's processing queue. These worksheets included data similar to that recorded in the collection's accession sheets as well as notes on transcription and permissions management, and overall project quality control. Many of the cataloging worksheets also include copies of the interview abstracts generated by the museum. The information captured on the item level in the cataloging worksheets was then transferred in spreadsheet form to progress logs, which tracked the conducting and finalizing of interviews from start to finish.
- Box-Folder 19.13: Signed Gift and Release Forms, 1975-1991 Add to Shelf
- Signed permissions forms granting unrestricted use of a given interview are included for the vast majority of the subjects interviewed as part of the Horner Museum's program. A small portion of these forms contain restrictions either annotated on the form or appended on separate page. The forms are arranged by Horner Museum accession number.
- Box-Folder 19.14: Photographic Negatives, undated Add to Shelf
- Twelve photographic negatives of unidentified interviewees are arranged into this folder.
