Mr. Frank Chilson
P. O. Box 685
Palm Desert, California
Dear Mr. Chilson:
I am pleased that you should write to me again.
My wife and I are now getting settled in our new house, near Stanford University, and I am working on several scientific problems.
I agree with the statement in your letter that some of the university students fail to act in accordance with my statement that we must bring law and order into the world as a whole. I do not think that their actions have been nearly so violent and basically unlawful as those of their elders. The war in Vietnam and the institution of the draft for the military service are probably the most significant reasons for the present student unrest. I myself feel strongly that a young man who does not want to kill any of his fellowmen should not be forced by the government to do so.
I estimate the ratio of the violence done by the government to that done by the revolting students as about one million to one.
In an editorial in the San Francisco Chronicle today (when I am dictating this letter) it was quite evident that the students in Berkeley had demonstrated a month ago in an impressive and completely orderly manner, as also in Sacramento, but that the Regents of the university in their action last week showed that they have failed to understand the students at all. The columnist Hoppe expressed the same opinion in different words. The Regents are too narrow in their point of view to serve the people of California effectively.
Sincerely,
Linus Pauling
