Mr. Konalds W. Clark
10 Campden Street
Kensington,
London W8, England
Dear Mr. Clark:
I have found the quotation from Einstein about which you wrote to me, and I send it to you herewith.
I visited Professor Einstein once every few months for a number of years, in Princeton. My last visit with him was from 11:00 A. M. to noon on 16 November 1954.
Just before I said goodbye to him he made the statements quoted below. I made an effort to fix them in my mind, and as soon as I had said goodbye and reached the sidewalk I jotted them down in my 1954 pocket diary.
In our discussion of world affairs he said to me "Oxenstierna said to his son ‘You would be astonished to know with how little wisdom the world is governed’".
He also said that he was glad to see, from reports in the New York Times, that I had made good use of the Nobel Prize in my public statements. (I did not make a verbatim record of this statement: the foregoing sentence is written in my diary.)
Then he made the following statement to me: "I made one great mistake in my life - when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made; but there was some justification - the danger that the Germans would make them".
This sentence, in quotation marks, is exactly as it appears in my diary.
I think that we discussed this matter somewhat further, but I do not remember anything definite about the discussion.
My wife and I fly to London tomorrow. We shall be there from 30 July to 12 August, staying in the Swiss Cottage Hotel. We are attending the Second World Congress of Social Psychiatry.
Sincerely,
Linus Pauling
