Dear Peter:
Mama and I were away on a trip when your letter of 22 May arrived. We had our house in Santa Barbara on the market, and it was sold last week. We had the job of moving our things out of it, some of them to the ranch and some into storage.
Also, we are now in the final stages of moving out of our La Jolla house, which we had leased for nine months. We shall now be at the ranch most of the time until 1 October. We are planning to lease the same house or another house for the coming winter season.
I am pleased that you, as president of the Chemical and Physical Society of University College, London, should invite me to be Distinguished Visitor of the Society and give a lecture in early February, 1969, and also to be the guest of the Society at the annual dinner and dance.
I wish that it were possible to accept the invitation, but I feel that it is not. Mama and I have decided that we should not travel very much during the winter. Although our health is pretty good, and we do not catch colds as often as we did before we began taking large amounts of vitamin C (3 grams a day, steadily), we still feel that it would be wise to keep the amount of strain to which we are subjected as small as possible, and that in particular we should avoid travel in the winter.
Please express my regrets to your associates in the Chemical and Physical Society.
I am expecting to work hard during the next four months. I promised Stan Schaefer that I would complete the preparation of the third edition of General Chemistry this summer, and I am determined to make a great effort to do the job.
Our paper on trireticulate structures was held up for one month by my delay in reading proof, and then for another month because of a rule of the Proceedings that an author cannot have more than eight pages of publication in the same issue of the Journal. I trust that it will be in the June issue.
Much love from,
Daddy
