New Haven, Conn.
Dear Edith:
I am pleased that you should write to me, to ask what my favorite book was when I was young.
I read many books when I was a small boy. The one that I remember best, which I read first when I was eight years old and then many times during the next few years, is Through the Looking Glass, by Lewis Carroll. I still remember many of the verses in it. I did not have a copy of his other book, Alice in Wonderland, and I read it only some years later.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
