    Dear Dr. Walker:

I have been interested to read your letter, in which you ask about the possibility of neutralizing maternal antibodies against the Rh antigens.

My colleague Professor Dan H. Campbell has during recent years made a considerable effort to isolate haptens from Rh positive cells, with the idea that they would neutralize the maternal antibodies. He was unsuccessful in this work, and it is my understanding that other people who have tried the same thing have been unsuccessful. I think that this is a reasonable attack on the problem, and it is too bad that it has failed, so far. Professor Campbell is also interested in the general problem of the permeability of the placenta to antibodies. Not very much is known in this field, and I think that additional experiments would be worth while.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:W
