  I am greatly pleased to have received your letter of 26 September, and to know that I can count on an additional gift to the California Institute of Technology for support of my researches for a minimum of five years. The fund that you and Anita provided during the last year has been of extraordinarily great value to me; in particular, it has relieved me of a considerable pressure that I would have been under otherwise to obtain money for support of certain aspects of my work that are hard to include in the funds available. Please tell Anita too how greatly I appreciate this action that you and she are taking.

  Our work on mental deficiency has started off well, but I have already had a surprise. One of my proposals was that we attempt to develop a test for phenylketonuric heterozygotes; I had in mind that a phenylalanine clearance test, involving injection into the blood stream of a standard amount of phenylalanine and determination of the phenylalanine level thereafter, would do the job. A recent issue of Lancet contains an abstract of a talk by another investigator, in which he reports that injection of phenylalanine in the parents of patients with phenylketonuria leads to the elimination of phenylalanine in the urine, whereas it does not in normal individuals. I think that we shall probably check this work-I am a bit skeptical about it, because I have thought that the heterozygotes would have about half as much active enzyme as normal individuals, and that this amount of active enzyme would be enough to keep phenylalanine or phenylpyruvic acid from appearing in the urine, although I have thought that an increased level of phenylalanine after injection of a sample of it might be observed. I suppose that some of the other investigations that we have had in mind will be undertaken by other people, too.

  We now have nine people working more or less directly on our Ford Foundation project. Only four of them are on salaries paid from the Ford Foundation grant-we have used a larger amount this year for outfitting laboratories, buying equipment such as spectrophotometers and electrophoretic apparatus, etc., than will be spent in the following years. One of them is from Harvard Medical School and MGH; he is Dr. David Allen, who got his M.D. at Harvard a couple of years after you. He had a National Science Foundation Fellowship. He is working in the analysis of proteins for phenylalanine, with the idea of making these determinations about ten times more precisely than has been done before. Another is Dr. Dhar, from Lucknow, India. He is the director of the pharmacological section of the National Central Laboratory of India for Research on Drugs. He is here with his wife and boy, supported by a fellowship given by the Rockefeller Foundation. Another is Dr. Santamaria, from Naples. I think that his fellowship is a Smith-Mundt Fellowship, perhaps also supplemented by a grant from the Italian Government. He is an M.D. too. I have another M.D. working with me, Dr. Oleg Jardetsky, who has a National Research Council Fellowship in the Medical Sciences. His wife, Dr. Christine Jardetsky, holds a fellowship from the American Cancer Society. Both of them are working on problems connected with enzyme chemistry, but they have expressed an interest in doing some work on the mental disease problem; in particular, if we can get some autopsy material they may attempt to isolate the enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of phenylalanine to tyrosine.

  Mama and I are disappointed that we shall not get to see you and the children soon, but we are looking forward to the visit to Honolulu a year from this Christmas. Mama, I think, has written to you that we shall be in Europe during most of next summer. We hope that you and the children can come to see us before then.

  We are still very pleased with Deer Flat Ranch. We drove up last Thursday afternoon, and came home again Sunday morning-I was scheduled to give a talk at a meeting of the American Scandinavian Foundation in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon. On Friday and Saturday we watched the sea otters, flushed out several deer, dug a bit in the Indian shell mound in the hope of finding another soapstone olla, like the beautiful one, about fifteen inches in diameter, that had been dug up by Mr. Evans, with the skeleton of an Indian draped about it, clambered over the rocks of Salmon Cone, which is at the southwest edge of our place, talked about where we would build our new house, and in general had a good time. We got up before daybreak on Sunday, and passed eight deer during the first few miles of our trip home, one of them a nice buck with half a dozen points. Also, we were pleasantly surprised to have hundreds of monarch butterflies arrive, and settle down, apparently for the winter, on a few branches of one of the Monterey cypresses back of the house. I had thought that these butterflies all settled down for the winter in the grove of Monterey pines at Pacific Grove, 75 miles farther north.

  Dear Mr. McInerny:

  I have received your letter of 27 September, and the paper ["]The Effect of Fluorides on the Human Body" by Charles A. Brusch.

  I think that the paper by Charles A. Brusch has no value whatever. The distinction between natural fluorides and artificial fluorides that he makes is meaningless. Calcium fluoride in solution is completely ionized, as is sodium fluoride. The effect of the fluoride ion on the human body has to be exactly the same for a solution of sodium fluoride as for a solution of calcium fluoride.

  I could point out many statements in the paper that have no significance to the question of fluoridation of water, or are simply incorrect. For example, the statement about the greater solubility of artificial fluorides than natural fluorides in water has no significance, because the amount of fluoride that is added to water in the fluoridation of water is so small that the solubility product of even the less soluble fluorides is not reached, and the physiological effect of fluoride ion is not at all influenced by the larger solubility of sodium fluoride than of calcium fluoride. I do not think that the statement that fluoride acts as a flux combining with calcium, magnesium, etc. has any significance. The reference to coval[e]nt bonds is presumably simply an error; I do not think that it matters whether the bonds in a molecule are covalent bonds or are not covalent bonds, so far as the effect of fluoride ion in solution goes.

  It is my opinion that the people who are objecting to the use of fluoridated water do not understand chemistry or medicine.

  Dear Peter:

  I have had a telephone call from Perryman Mojonier Co., Custom House Brokers, 354 South Spring Street (telephone Michigan 1178), Los Angeles. Mr. Folmer talked with me. He says that the Mercedes Benz will arrive on the steamship Lochhaven due about the 23rd of October. He said that we need documents authorizing clearance: ownership documents, German motor license book, carnet de passage, and a statement about the number of miles that the car has been driven since you got it. I told him that I thought that it had been purchased in Germany, although I was not sure.

  Also, Mr. Folmer said that their company could take care of the whole job of bringing it through customs and delivering it to our house, so that I shall not have to do anything about it. However, I need the documents.

  I am sending a carbon copy of this letter to Crellin. In case that you have sent any documents to him, he can send then on down to me.

  I have not yet got a license on the Porsche. Crellin said that the officials here were apt to be rather sticky about ownership, and that we would have to have a notarized statement about ownership of the car. Could you send such a statement to me? suppose that I can be the registered owner, and you the actual owner, or whatever the documents require. If you want, we can put the Porsche in storage. I have not yet sold the 1953 one.

  Mama and I are going to Beer Flat Ranch on Thursday afternoon. Barclay Ray is going up with us, in order to check over the geology of the place, and especially to look at the rock cliffs to see whether he can estimate the rate at which it is being eroded away. My estimate is about one foot average in ten or twenty years - there was a fence put up close to the edge thirteen years ago, by Mr. Evans, who homesteaded the place in 1916, and this fence is still close to the edge, with apparently a few of the posts having been freed through rock falls from the cliff. The rock looks pretty hard to me, and I think that it would be possible to build a house quite close to the edge of the cliff, without danger. Linda will probably go up with us, and come back Sunday morning, since she is to pour at Mrs. DuBridge's tea for the faculty. I am going to take the plane Sunday evening from San Luis Obispo, so that I can spend a few days at Oberlin College, returning on Friday. Mama will stay up at the ranch probably until Thursday, and then drive back to Pasadena.

  We had the tea for the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering day before yesterday. It was a great success. As usual, Mama had arranged fruit and vegetables in a beautiful display on the old picnic table, up north of the big oak trees. She had bought hundreds of very small frankfurters, about 2 inches long, and one of the boys, Dr. Forrest Carter, took charge of roasting them over a charcoal fire on the patio. The punch was very good. Although it had been cold and rainy for two or three days, the day of the tea turned out to be beautifully clear and pleasantly warm. Pauline and Michael came over. Pauline is in the middle of a lawsuit - she has sued some of the department stores for selling cheap imitations of her shoes and the verdict will be rendered on 1 December. She thinks that her patent will be found valid.

  About a week ago I moved into my new office, on the second floor of the Church Laboratory. It is perhaps a little larger than my other office. Different in shape, too - 16 by 33 feet. The windows face to two doors. It is 18 feet long, has from the floor to 3 feet high, tiers of 5 drawers each, and above that 4 feet of cabinet space, with sliding glass doors. It is beautifully finished, made with a nice wood - maple,in a light oak finish. The cabinet is 27 inches deep, as are the drawers. I have some models and some books in it at present. I have a chemical bench, sink, and hood at the west end, and a group of filing cases.

  Dear Daddy,

  We were very pleased to receive your letter of the 9th which arrived today.

  With respect to the Merc, I enclose the registration certificate with the British Motor Authorities, a receipt from the man from whom I bought the car, a statement as to the mileage the car has done in my hands, and an expired International Certificate for Motor Vehicles. I do not have a Garnet, though I had one it was retained by the Automobile Association when I returned to this country. The car was exported from this country on a Bank of England form. I bought the car in England. I am very pleased that the mechanics of importation will not rest upon you.

  As to the Porsche, I have sent the receipted invoice from Messrs. A.P.N., the dealers from whom I bought the car, to you. I shall send the receipts for the money I paid along with a statement about ownership.

  I would like it if these various documents were not to be mislaid, and perhaps they could be filed in a convenient file somewhere. I think you can do what you wish with the Porsche. Do you have need for it?

  I am pleased you are enjoying the ranch so much, and look forward to seeing it. How close is the closest airstrip? I am rather sorry for Julia's and Thomas' sake that we are staying here. Thomas does not like the rainy weather. I think we shall move into a central heated flat in a block in North London towards the end of November. It is furnished and rather expensive, but I wish things to be as easy as possible for Julia.

  She has just rung and sends her love. She is sorry she has not written recently.

  It is nice you are in your new room. You will remember you showed it to Linus and me in 1955 before the building was finished. It seemed narrow to me, but the hall is biased towards the south side limiting the width of the southern rooms.

  Thank you for sending on the copy of Audio. When we move, we shall write & change the address, though it costs $1.50 an years more addressed here. We should move in a month or so, to a furnished centrally heated flat in a block in Murwell Hill.

  Thomas is a darling. He is very good, behaves admirably. He pots well, sleeps most of the time. He laughs & plays with me, and does what I tell him. He does not like to burp, but is very talented at farting. He has grown a great deal and seems to be more & more interested.

  I have begun at University College and shall have to learn some chemistry. It is quite interesting.

  We look forward to seeing your ranch, which must be lovely. Perhaps we could be resident cliff watcher to guard against erosion.

  Dear Mama,

  I just came home from shopping and found your letter with pictures. I read it first as Peter is at work. I certainly wish we could come to you for Christmas, but don't know what Peter will say about this. He seems to be taking his paternal position very seriously, and to have agreed somewhat in the last two months. It is partly that ghastly beard which he still refuses to part with. What shall I do? I have tried everything I can think of.

  I am sorry not to write sooner. I just always seem to tired and uninspired when I at last get to sitting down. It is worth it though, I do appreciate all your lovely letters too. My own mother gets frightfully cross when I do not write and this depresses me and cramps my style even more.

  Thomas is so gorgeous. All my relations who visit say he is like me but I am sure you would think he was like Peter, the crinkles up his nose when he smiles in just the same way. Also, I am sure I was not such a nice baby. He is very good, just naughty sometimes to show that he is human. He first smiled on the day exactly that he was six weeks old. He has a very gooey, sentimental smile. It is his two months' birthday today.

  The ranch looks heavenlyThe sea right close. I have always loved the sea. I wish we could come.

  I have a very tentative request to you, if you can spare the time and trouble. Joy Jonckheere lent me two cook-books, which Mrs. Bridges admires very much, and I wondered if you could get them for her.   Dear Dr. Lamont:

  I am pleased to have your letter, and the opportunity to carry on a discussion with you by mail.

  I did not define mass in my book on chemistry, because the book is not supposed to cover the field of physics, and I have had trouble in saying the things about chemistry that I want to say without having idle book become too large.

  If I were to attempt to define mass, I should say that it is the quality that is involved in gravitational attraction and in resistance to change of motion. Rigorously, of course, one should describe two qualities, gravitational mass and inertial mass. It is found by experiment that these two qualities are strictly proportional to one another - no exception has been found. Accordingly at the present time we are justified in lumping them together into a single quality. (I am not sure that I am using the word quality in the right way - that is, in the way used by philosophers.)

  Energy has both gravitional mass and inertial mass. A quantum of light, which is described as energy and not matter, attracts all other masses in the universe. Also, a quantum of light resists a change in its state of notion, resists acceleration, in the way determined by its mass.

  I do not remember whether anyone has coined a word to apply to everything that has mass. I believe that some people have used the expression matter-energy. I do not feel that spacial extension is satisfactory.

  I have to say that I do not have any feeling at all about the ultimate metaphysical categories that you list in your letter -activity, form, duration, etc. Do you define them rigorously, or are they introduced as indefinables?

  Thank you for your letter & the photographs of the ranch, which looks lovely. I think you should plant some trees, perhaps a lot of trees. Do they grow? Conifers?

  I am quite excited about the possibility of coming home for Christmas; the idea had never seriously occurred to me.

  Linus & Anita had suggested that if we could get ourselves to the Pacific coast, then they would help with the LA ↔Honolulu jump, which would be about $735. I do not know if they would donate this amount to a transportation kitty.

  The 3^rd return fare for Thomas, Julia, and me, London to Los Angeles via the pole would be about $1500, quite a tidy sum. As a student, or on the family plan, we might knock 1/3 off that, though perhaps so much is not possible. How are your connections with SAS?

  I am not sure that the student reduction applys to the North Atlantic run, nor may it apply to student's dependents. You might ask at that and and I shall ask here.

  Julia's visa expires on November 30^th so either she must come by then or we must get a new one. We could get her a visitor's visa for the short visit.

  Well, we should be mighty pleased to come. It just depends on the kitty.

  I was greatly pleased to receive your letter of 9 September - of the rather large number of letters that I have got during the last month or two, it was the one that has given me the most happiness.

  My colleagues and I are hard at work now on our new investigations. We are confident that something will come out of the work - we are trying to get the answer to a basic biological problem, about the relation between the genes, including defective genes, and the organism, the human being himself. This problem is such a great one that we cannot hope to do more than to obtain a small part of its solution; but I am sure that even a small part will help in the attack on disease.

  Dear Mr. Ward:

  In answer to your letter of 24 October, I would say that I think that it might well be that x-ray and other evidence would permit non-intertwined compound helical configurations for α-keratins.

  The 7-strand cable structure that Professor Corey and I proposed gives a reasonable explanation of some of the features of the x-ray patterns of proteins, the density, etc. We could not show, however, that this is the only structure compatible with the evidence. Nine alpha helixes in a hexagonal unit might be satisfactory, without having seven of them twisted into a 7-strand cable, if they differed from one another in such a way as to give rise to a 28 Å equatorial reflection, and also if some of them at least were compound helixes that would account for the 5.1 Å meridional reflection. The twisting into a cable seems to me to be the simplest way of handling these matters.

  The available evidence for collagen and nucleic acid indicates reasonably strongly that molecules are twisted about one another, but the evidence cannot be said to be perfectly conclusive. It is true that the difficulty that you mention, of untwisting the twisted helixes, is a reasonably serious one, and there has been a certain amount of discussion of it in the literature. I myself think that it might well be that the molecules do untwist in the process of growth of the organism.
