    20 September 1956

    Dr. Corliss Lamont

    450 Riverside Drive

    New York 27, New York

    Dear Dr. Lamont:

Let me answer the question in the last paragraph of your letter of 10 September first. When I heard your talk about Humanism in Los Angeles a few months ago, I decided that I am a Humanist. I think that I told you at the time that your talk was a wonderfully precise and illuminating discussion of the subject. I am glad to repeat this statement now.

I am pleased that you have got a copy of my book GENERAL CHEMISTRY - I wish that I had sent it to you. I hope that you find severa [sic] sections worth reading. Have you read the chapter on biochemistry? I think that it is pretty good.

I have some trouble in answering your questions about energy and matter. I have several times tried to understand philosophy. I have never had much success. As to the statement that I made that the universe is composed of substances (forms of matter) and radiant energy, I would say that the aspects of energy that you are thinking of - latent heat of fusion, chemical energy, and so on - are included in ay category of substance. I do not think that it is sensible to say that a piece of sugar is something more than the substance sugar. It is true that the substance sugar at 25° C is different in its properties than the substance sugar at 0° C; but the differences between the two samples of matter cannot be simply attributed to something else, energy, in the sugar. Radiant energy, on the other hand, is not associated with substance, although, of course, it has mass. I have thought it worth while to restrict the word substance to those aspects of nature that have finite rest mass.

One complication that you have to worry about is that the kinetic energy of a moving body depends upon the frame of reference.

I do not feel very happy about the expression matter-energy.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:W
