    Dear Gary:

I have been pleased to read the manuscript on the tetrachlorocuprate ion, sent with your letter of December 10. I have not found anything in the manuscript to complain about. It is fine that you were able to attack this problem so successfully.

I suppose that your conclusion that the amount of covalent character in a complex of this sort decreases with increase in the number of ligands is closely related to my electroneutrality rule.

I shall look forward to learning about the work that you embark on in your new job.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:ms
