  Dear Tom:

  I have not heard anything about action by the Committee on Medical Research on our proposals for contract, and I am beginning to think about what action should be taken in case that the proposals were turned down. Failure to get our contract would not be a very serious matter to us, since our part of the work is a small one, but you would be seriously handicapped if your contract were not extended.

  Do you not think that it would be worth while to see what you can do about getting support for your work for a few years from some Foundation? I judge that you have no hope for further support from The Rockefeller Foundation. Why don't you try the John and Mary R. Markle Foundation? Perhaps there is some other foundation also which would be interested in what you are doing.

  If you were to approach the Markle Foundation, I think that you should emphasize the matter of getting information which would be of value in preventing renal damage and in the treatment of nephritis. I think that the work which you have planned for the immediate future has enough promise of results which could be applied clinically to interest the Markle Foundation. You would not of course need so much money from them as from the CMR, since the University would not charge overhead. In fact, I feel strongly that with the record of achievement which you have made you should expect the University to put up part of the cost of your investigation.

  This brings me to a question which has caused me some concern recently - namely, why do you not set out upon a crusade for your method of treatment of glomerular nephritis? Do you not think that it is wrong to allow clinicians throughout the country to continue to prescribe a treatment which you know to be deleterious? Would not the publication of your book be part of this crusade? I think that, even though your book were to published, some journal articles dealing with certain aspects of the problem would also be worth while. Of course, I may be wrong in thinking that information about your treatment is not readily available to clinicians - I do not know to what extent clinicians now use your method, and to what extent the opposed method.

  Dear Dad

  After long long silence once more writes the prodigal son. Or, more properly the black sheep of the family.

  Father's Day! As it approached there came into my head a brilliant thought some gift must be contrived. So one day as I was ambling about town window shopping I noticed a brilliant display. Here were colors of every description except harmonious ones. These mixtures of color were ties brought into temporary popularity bye the oh-so-great-and-magnificent Frankie (Ooooo!) Sinatra. Ah ha! thought I , here is something that might possibly amuse my staid and respectable professor father.

  After buying at random I was somewhat disappointed that these ties lost in brightness when alone and individual. There followed my usual period of inaction but finally it was mailed. When some weeks had passed my conscience caught up with me and I decided that you couldn't keep on wondering forever what had happened to my intelligence if in existence). So this letter.

  I am learning as much about radio as the army has to teach. Sometimes this is not very much because the instructors are ordinary G.I.'s who have gone through the school with an average of 85% or better. Consequently most of them don't know how to teach. Efficiency is often poor, too, as is common in the army where everyone has a finger in the pic.

  The war except for China seems to be progressing along satisfactorily. But everyone is still too optimistic about the time if will take.

  I returned herewith Jean Oliver's letter, which I was glad to see.

  No information has reached me yet about our proposals for a Contract. Joe Koepfli telephoned from Washington to say that Robert Loeb had not heard anything about kidney damage resulting from injections of albumin or plasma. Have you heard anything more on this?

  Dr. Jameson stopped in yesterday morning, and talked with Dr. Campbell. I saw her for only a few minutes, because I had to run off to a lecture.

  I would like to come up to see you, but I doubt that I can arrange to do so for two or three months yet. I may have to make a trip to Washington next month in connection with the work of Division 8 of the N.D.R.C.

  I certainly hope that you will be able to come east in August. Both Daniels and Williams said that you had mentioned the possibility. I would be overjoyed to see you.

  I was delighted with the pictures you sent. They are wonderful. Linda especially seems to have grown. And Daddy's garden furniture.

  July 22

  A day of KP yesterday seventeen hours.

  Thanks ever so much again for those snaps I've been showing then all around.

  Here in Aircraft Radio Equipment now the last phase. It includes all the radios commonly used in the air corps. The last three days we spend on SCR 269, the radio compass. The next three are on 299, a big mobile unit of three transmitters and two receivers.

  I don't have an Islandia at present. I've lost one and given two away so far. But I'll get another one sometime, probably when I get to a field where I can save some money.

  Free time is becoming scarce now. Besides the unfortunate schedule we have an hour of aircraft identification each morning. Every air cargo man in the U.S. has to take ACI after that Sicilian fiasco. And glee club takes up another hour.

  July 25

  ACI is pretty interesting we learned today about P63, a bigger P39. The interesting part is the Allisin engine, still 1050HP as usual , but the lateral allisnis have air emergency booster which can be used no longer than fifteen seconds before burning out the engine, and which adds 500 HP. to the plane. Very handy in tight moments. By the way, a P39 with the red Russian star can in to the field yesterday.

  Hey Mom how's the melon situation? Some green melons would probably get her in fine shape and would they be good! But probably the season is over.

  Dear Mom

  I got your very nice letter today.

  What's this you tell me about Jesse DuMond? I can't imagine any such luck. In fact it seems almost impossible. My theoretical knowledge of radio isn't much more than one would get in college physics but I've gained a fair amount of practical knowledge. Electronics at Chanute, which I finish in October or November, is largely theory on vacuum tubes, so I'd learn something there. I can't think I'd be much help to Jesse, at least as a radioman. After graduating from this school we can do only first and second echelon work replacing tubes, fixing relays, installation, tuning, etc. Supposedly no soldering iron stuff on the sets at all. Trouble-shooting is the extent we're not authorized to replace the defective part. So you can see that even the army doesn't consider us radio men. But I can't imaging a better job than working for Jesse. It would be wonderful.

  I hope you do come east in August. I will be very happy to see you. Where would you like to stay? The Williams will be here then, I think.

  Do you remember that book that someone gave me about a canoe trip down the Ohio and Mississippi? It was called Where the Rivers Meet or something like that. I wish you would send it if you can find it. Prof. Williams said he thought something of the kind would be good for his daughter to read.

  It's a shame that Crellie's having a hard time retaining an image memory of me. But it isn't hard to forget what someone looks like. I'm afraid that a furlough may not come until December or thereabouts.

  How does Hastings' place look after the army? I'll bet you're glad to get rid of the range. Pete will miss Lieut. Monk.

  I like harpsichord music. I've heard quite a lot over the radio, but I've never seen it. It would be fun to have a harpsichord.

  I ran out of paper.

  I remember the Elliotts. Are they still in Pomona?

  You garden certainly sounds fine. It's going to be good to get back to it.

  Dear Dr. Prentiss:

  Under our NDRC contract OEMsr-584 development and construction were started last summer on five Model K Oxygen Meters, which feature the large permanent magnet, and one Modal L Oxygen Meter, otherwise designated as the "airplane model". It was intended that two of the Model K meters be kept here and that the other three Model K meters and the one Model L meter be sent out for such testing and application as might be desired by the NDRC.

  The construction of three of the Model K meters and the one Model L meter has been completed. The completion of the two meters which were to remain here has been postponed indefinitely because of the difficulty of obtaining suitable suspensions from the commercial source and because one of the relays which was to be used arrived in a damaged condition and has not yet been replaced. These two meters require only the two suspensions, two calibrated scales, and the one relay for final completion.

  Of the three Model K meters which have been completed, two are considered to be satisfactory for sending out. They have respective ranges of 0-45 and 0-85 mm. of oxygen partial pressure. The other meter, which was to be given a range of 95 to 100 percent of one atmosphere of oxygen, has instead a range of 450-760 mm. of oxygen with the 650-760 portion of the range covering about half of the scale. We are not satisfied with this range, which was the best we were able to get with only suspension we could obtain for this type of instrument. We are particularly dissatisfied with the compromising changes we were compelled to make in the meter so that this suspension, some of the characteristics of which were far from those desired, could be used at all.

  The Medal L meter has been given a range of 0-186 mm. of oxygen because of the difficulty of obtaining a suspension for the 0-800 mm. range originally intended for this model and because we had on hand a suspension suitable for the former range. This range has the disadvantage of making the meter useless for testing tank oxygen at atmospheric pressure but has the advantage of greater sensitivity over the range corresponding to respirable gas mixtures. The meter has been severely tested on the vibration table. The suspension was not broken in this test but it has been subsequently found that the suspension is poorly balanced, presumably as a result of this very severe test. The meter in its present condition is therefore not satisfactory for airplane use as such an application requires that it give reasonably accurate readings when tipped through large angles.

  We are able to ship out any of these meters at the convenience of the NDRC, but we recommend that only two meters, Model K Serial No. 4, with range 0-45 mm., and Model K Serial No. 3, with range 0-85 mm., be made available to any agency for test. I would appreciate it very much if you would advise me as to the desired disposition of these meters. Dr. A. 0. Beckman would probably be interested to undertake further work on the other meters, including the two Model K meters which lack suspensions.

  The final report for the oxygen meter project has been written and is now in the process of duplication.
