  This morning we arrived at Chanute Field. I haven't seen much of the field yet, but the barracks are much better than Truax's. We're on the midnight to 6AM shift in school I don't know yet when we sleep. But meantime I sleep at all possible moments. That shift is going to be horrible as far as learning anything goes. The one good thing a 40 hour day off. Time enough to go even to Madison.

  I joined a small poker game on the train won and lost five dollars and quit in half an hour. It was fun.

  I've been reading Freud's "Psycho-analysis." Quite interesting.

  Give my love to the children. I'll write again soon.

  Dear Mom

  This field is much more like an air field than Truax is. I wandered down to the landing strip yesterday and watched the Lihs and AT-6's coming in. It was very beautiful.

  Besides going to school from midnight to 6AM we sleep from 7 to 3. Isn't that horrible? How I'm going to learn anything I don't know. The course seems to be very much on oscilloscopes.

  There are several things here in the PX that I might be able to buy for you if you wish flashlight batteries and bulbs, soap of various kinds just mention to me things that you think I might possibly obtain.

  Smith is very greatly engrossed in writing love letters to Mary Ann. He amuses me terribly. His grammar and spelling are rather poor, so I go over his letters and correct them. He doesn't like this very well, but he would prefer to have a decent letter. By the way, his address is 1946 Beckford St. L.A.; Telephone Ardmore 8-3288. I think his parents would appreciate you talking to them.

  Dear Mom

  Are you going to send me the addresses of any of your university of Illinois friends? Also, do you know anyone in Miami or West Palm Beach? That is rather unimportant because I'll probably be around Boca Raton for ten or twelve weeks.

  I'm going to Chicago on Sunday. I think I'll go see Thorfin with Smith.

  We got permanent class A passes if we can do 15 pullups so I just went down to the latrine to see if I could do it I managed to do 14, which is more than I've done since starting Flintridge in 1942. Twelve is my normal maximum.

  Airplanes are terribly noise here. We are often awakened at AT's buzzin around. The big Lib's don't make very much sound.

  I got some interesting maps from Betty for you to see. Would you send them back eventually?

  Dear mom

  I went to Chicago last Saturday with Smith. I called Thorfin's house, but no one was home all evening so I didn't get to see him. We spent the night at the Service Men's Center which has everything free. Even streetcars are free to us. I didn't see much of the city only the hoop district. Lake Michigan is beautiful so is Chicago from the lakeside, especially at night,

  We spent the morning of our first day waiting in the Operations office for a plane going Chicagoward. But none arrived, to at noon we gave up and caught a Greyhound. Our day off is wonderfully long 8 Sunday morning to 9 Monday night.

  I got my watch back from Jensen's. They fixed the insides but left the face in the rushed and mildewed condition it has attained. So now I'll have to go spend some money having it cleaned,

  Dear Professor Lewis:

  I have been very interested to read your paper in the last Journal on the absorption and fluorescence of hydrocarbon free radicals. I happened to notice that it is possible to interpret the vibrational fine structure which you have observed by the use of the available data from the Raman effect. The principle Raman lines for a mono-substituted benzene correspond to frequency shifts of about 200, 620, 820, 990, 1030, 1160, 1200, 1580, 1600, and about 3000 cm.-1 These Raman shifts correspond very closely to your bands 1 to 7: indeed, from your Figure 2 I would judge that your band No. 6 might well have a fine structure corresponding to the lines 1030, 1160, and 1200. Perhaps your lines 8, 9, and 10 are overtones or combinations of the Raman lines, or fundamentals forbidden in Raman scattering.

  With a little better resolution your technique might well provide a great deal of interesting information about the vibrations of di-molecules.

  I have just returned from a trip to Washington, where, among other activities, I had a talk with Chadwell about a problem in which he is interested. He mentioned that he had also written to you about this matter. We are going to do a small amount of work in connection with this problem, and I have hopes that some good results will come out of the work.

  Helen and I are still hoping that we can come to Berkeley for a visit before long, perhaps in two or three months. We shall look forward to seeing you and Mrs. Lewis again.

  I am pleased to learn from your letter of September 13 that Dr. Lipkis has given quantities of oxypolygelatin to ten or twelve patients, with satisfactory results.

  It is my understanding that Dr. Lipkis plans to administer the material to a second group of ten or twelve patients and to obtain further blood samples, in accordance with his discussion with Dr. Campbell. I believe that it would be desirable to restrict the investigation to about this number of patients, until a survey has been made of the results obtained. Consideration could then be given to the question as to whether or not to prepare another large oxypolygelatin preparation for further investigation.

  Dear Linus:

  I am sorry that there has been so much delay in answering your letter of August 18th. I am still spending all of my time on war work, and Frank Hanson and I accordingly get very little opportunity to talk things over. We have talked about your letter several times, however, and I would like to give you a wholly informal and personal reaction to it.

  First of all, let me say at once that the problems you have in mind seem to us to be of absolutely first-rate importance. It seems to us one of the fields in which we ought to have a specially active interest. Furthermore, it seems to me important that we try to carry over into peace-time research some of the ways of working together which have been found so effective during the war.

  On the other hand, I must confess to a good deal of skepticism as to whether it is either possible or desirable to carry over, into peace-time research, many of the elements of organization and control which properly and inevitably characterize war-time work.

  There is another matter which gives me a little concern- The proposal of your letter is based, at least in part, on the presumption that a large number of well-trained scientists will be looking for employment when the war comes to an end. I agree that there will be a large number of the younger men who will be shifting their employment; but I cannot persuade myself that it is going to be very easy to get able and well-trained men. I would anticipate that, to take care of the accumulated backlog, and under the stimulus of Federal support, the undergraduate registration in our colleges and universities would be very high indeed. This will make a great demand for teachers, and particularly for younger teachers and elementary subjects. I should suppose that the demand for teaching assistants would be a very active one.

  Therefore it does not seem to me either realistic or proper or necessary to think of your proposal as, in any -way, a way of taking up slack. I am sure that you, yourself, did not intend it so. But I would have been less disturbed if you had remarked that it would probably be very ...difficult to get the men you wanted but that the problem was so important and the opportunity so attractive that you nevertheless thought you could succeed.

  I hope you will not interpret the tone of this letter as unduly critical or discouraging. I mean to be neither. As I said at the beginning, the problem seems to me one of compelling interest and importance. I am not at all sure that we would be prepared to consider support on quite so large a scale as you propose, but I would certainly be interested to have your comments as to the probable relative effectiveness of programs of different sizes. I would also like to have your reactions to the comments of this letter. I think it would be entirely feasible for us to give active consideration to such a situation at the present time. Indeed, if the scheme could be set up with sufficient flexibility to adjust itself to events, I would rather hope that, if we were in fact going to make any proposal to our Trustees at all, we could make it at the December meeting this year. This, in turn, would make it necessary that the proposal be pretty well worked out by November 1st. And this, in turn, indicates that the correspondence on this subject had certainly better not be much delayed from now on:

  I am not sure what documents are available, but I believe that the progress reports would be useful to us, especially the reports covering the details of the theory and also those on the treatment of heterogeneous solutes and on the experimental method. If you have available the papers on angular methods and on depolarization, both theoretical and experimental, they may be useful to us.
