    Professor Dr. Harald Wergeland

    Institute for Teoretisk Fysikk

    N.T.H.

    Trondheim, Norway

    Dear Professor Wergeland:

I was pleased to see your letter of 24 January, when I returned from a long trip to India and other countries. The final date for submitting nominations for Nobel Prizes, 31 January 1967, had been passed before my return and my seeing your letter.

I agree with you that the discovery made by Heitler and London was a very important one, probably such as to justify the reward of a Nobel Prize to them, and perhaps to Heitler, now that London has died. I do not know enough about Heitler's contributions to quantum electronics and quantum optics to have an opinion about his work in this field.

I shall think over your suggestion, in connection with recommendations that I may make for the coming year.

Under separate cover I am sending you my papers on nuclear structure. You may remember that I was working in this field when I last saw you, in Trondheim, and I thank you again for having lent me the Mayer-Jensen book.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling
