    Gentlemen:

I submit herewith the nomination, in duplicate, of Professor Matthew Meselson as the California Scientist of the Year 1959. The work that Dr. Meselson has done is described in the nomination. Two reprints describing the work accompany each of the two copies of the nomination. It is important to point out that the basic original idea behind each of these two papers came from Dr. Meselson.

I think that this work constitutes the most interesting work in the field of biology that was published in 1958. I think that Dr. Meselson is as able and promising a scientist of his age as I have ever seen.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:jh
