- Letter from J.B. Hatcher to Dr. Wm. N. Lacey, cc: Dr. G.W. Beadle and Dr. Sterling Emerson, RE: Explains the situation in which he is submitting his application for a Ph.D. Says that in 1941 he took a leave of absence for one year, but that upon returning he was required to undertake a new thesis problem even though the thesis he had completed after 3 years of work only needed to be written up. Says that in 1950 he brought this matter up with Dr. Beadle who appointed a committee to look into the matter. Eventually, Hatcher received notice that his work might still make an acceptable thesis. So, by March 1, 1951 the outline of the thesis was completed, yet after waiting 14 months to hear from the committee, he still has to write a thesis and pass an oral examination in just 2 weeks. Says that he is not going to continue his research at CIT and does not want to wait another year to receive his Ph.D. Asks Lacey, Beadle, and Emerson to consider the situation and examine to what extent they are willing to act in the interest of justice.
