September 13 [1944]
Dear mom
I went to Chicago last Saturday with Smith. I called Thorfin's house, but no one was
home all evening so I didn't get to see him. We spent the night at the Service Men's Center
which has everything free. Even streetcars are free to us. I didn't see much of the city only the
hoop district. Lake Michigan is beautiful so is Chicago from the lakeside, especially at night,
We spent the morning of our first day waiting in the Operations office for a plane going
Chicagoward. But none arrived, to at noon we gave up and caught a Greyhound. Our day off
is wonderfully long 8 Sunday morning to 9 Monday night.
I got my watch back from Jensen's. They fixed the insides but left the face in the rushed
and mildewed condition it has attained. So now I'll have to go spend some money having it
cleaned,
All my love to everyone,
Linus
