Dear Peter:
I return herewith to you one copy of your manuscript and a copy of the letter of transmittal to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
I think that the Proceedings asks for only one copy, which is why I am returning one to you.
I suggest that you make the three figures into a single figure, and attach letters A, B, C. This figure would take up about one third of a page. I think that the structures would be clear enough on that scale. Your drawings are excellent. The tapered lines seem to me to be very good in showing the third dimension.
Do you have access to a computer program that draws stereo drawings of molecules or crystals? It seems to me that you might want to use stereo drawings, in later papers. I have put about a dozen stereo drawings of crystal structures in the new General Chemistry. I should have liked to have more, but did not succeed in getting them drawn in time.
Most of the changes that I have made are minor ones, designed to make the paper easier to read. I removed or added commas, and eliminated some of your ellipses by putting in the verb a second or third time, in some cases.
I shifted the superscript for reference 7 to the end of the sentence, on page 2. It is not considered good form to attach a numerical superscript of this sort to a symbol, because of the possibility of confusion.
By the way, I note that I have used lower case a, b, and c in the figure, to avoid confusion with your use of capital letters to designate the ring.
I have not changed the second sentence on page 6.as much as it may need. The changes that I have made may be wrong. I think that only the left end for the two conformations can be described as , and this description is perhaps not strictly true. Also, the two words except in the sentence as originally written were confusing to me. You can make whatever changes you think are right when the proof comes.
In a number of sentences I have introduced words in place of a symbol, such as an equals sign, that was serving as the verb of the sentence. I think that it is confusing to the reader to have to recognize the symbol as the verb.
I'll write to you later about our coming to London and going to France. We have decided to come to the London meeting, beginning 4 August.
Love from,
Daddy

P.S. Your letter of 5 June arrived. Bierer telephoned me a few days ago. He said that he had written me in early April, but my secretary and I do not remember the letter. I had sort of forgotten about his conference, but I have written to say that we shall be there. Originally I had accepted with the understanding that we might not be able to attend the meeting.
Mama and I shall plan to stay in the hotel arranged by the Second International Congress of Social Psychiatry from 3 August until 8 August. We shall probably fly to New York about 11 August. Then we shall fly back to Stanford and Big Sur, and along about 5 September fly to Stockholm for the conference there, and probably visit Oslo and Copenhagen as well.
Do you think that it would be fun for Mama and me to be with you on Norfolk Broads from 26 July (possibly a day or two later) to 2 August?
We may want to go to Montpellier for a few days before then.
Much love,
Daddy
