Dear Peter:
Art Robinson may be coming to see you shortly after his arrival by boat on 12 June. I have suggested that you might be able to give him advice about what to see in London and on the Continent.

Miss Tondi Thompson
2337 Calle Corta
La Jolla, Calif. 92037
Dear Miss Thompson:
I am sorry that you feel that you must write to me to express your disappointment in me.
You accuse me of engaging in a rebel rousing spree (I assume that you meant to use the expression rabble rousing spree). I do not think that this characterization of my action is correct.
I know the dangers associated with protesting actions of those in power. I think that when people are forced to protest they should recognize, as they do, that they are in danger of punishment. Long ago, during the McCarthy period, I decided not to be stopped in protesting against evil and immoral by the threats that were made against me. I feel that it is my duty to suggest that other people follow a righteous course, and refuse to be cowed.
In your letter you say that the faculty has gone to a great deal of trouble to secure my appointment. I was not offered appointment for the year beginning 1 July 1969. I have no reason to assume that appointment would have been offered to me, ultimately, if I had not accepted a professorship in another university. I was not reappointed for the year 1968-69 until ten days after the beginning of the year (10 July 1969), more than three months after the offer of reappointment should have been made.
Someone has misinformed you about our employing a fatherless, sixteen year old Mexican girl in our household. For a few months my wife employed an older woman, rather irregularly, two or three times a month (two or three days a month). Sometimes she did not appear for work. On two or three occasions she sent a girl who was supposed to be her daughter or niece. Then my wife was no longer able to get in touch with her, and accordingly the woman has not been employed by us for some time. My wife accepted the young girl, on the few occasions when she came in place of the older woman. I think that she would like to have found someone who was available for regular employment, and was responsible enough to come regularly, but she did not succeed.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
