  Dear Dr. Chomsky

  I thank you for your letter of 16 April and the Draft of Committee to Support War Resistance letter.

  I have not been in close touch with draft resistance. I have made many public statements opposing the draft and opposing the war in Vietnam. Compulsory military service is contrary to the principle of the freedom of the individual human being. I have pointed out often that it is contrary to the spirit of free enterprise, which is rated so highly in this country. The corporations that manufacture bombs and military equipment are free to decide whether their profit is great enough to justify them in acting. The young men who are drafted into service are not free to decide whether they will take this chance of being maimed or killed, whether they will become murderers of their fellowmen.

  My reaction to your proposal is a favorable one.

  Dear Peter:

  Thanks for your letter. I agree with you that if you have a closed mind about chemical bonding and feel that you would not be interested in it, you are right in not accepting my invitation to help out with revising The Nature of the Chemical Bond. I do not think that it would be worthwhile to read the literature and keep up with certain fields - that would not be helpful enough to me.

  Mamma and I are just back from Princeton, where I gave three lectures on nuclear structure. On Saturday 15 April we also participated in the demonstration in New York - we were up in the front of the march, and I spoke for a little over a minute, in front of the United Nations building, along with a dozen other speakers, most of whom spoke at greater length. I estimated the number of people who marched from Central Park to the UN building at between 200,000 and 250,000. We left UN a little after four o'clock, and watched the end of the procession as it moved along Madison Avenue. The end came five hours after we had gone by the same place.

  I am looking forward to seeing your new lab. I may say that there is the possibility that Mamma and I shall not come to Europe in May. Presumably we shall decide in a few days.

  As to your February letter, I think that I received it, but I am not sure. There was such a great pile of letters when we got back from India that many of them have not been answered.
